This is a story of corrupt liaisons between criminal elements in the new Russian states and the world of legitimate finance in the West. It is also an intimate portrait of two families. Masterful and prescient, le Carré is writing at the top of his creative powers, and the central protagonist, Oliver Single, is one of his most fascinating characters.

Missing the magic

Might have been good, but impossible to hear

In fairness, I didn't listen to the book so can't say how good or bad it is/was. And the reason i couldn't listen to it was that the narration is VERY poor for listening in a car. Most of the time the narrator speaks in a looooow and deep voice which forces you to crank up the volume. This is interspersed with parts that are REALLY loud. No way to maintain a balance. The low speaking portions were so frustrating that inspite of really trying to listen, I just couldn't.
Pity....

What an incredible book this is! Thoroughly enjoyed it and was even a little sad when it ended. Listened to it almost every day during my commute and the book always made the madness of traffic and road rage seem like a non-issue. The narration was perfect and I feel Nicholas guy Smith exactly captured the ethos of the book and of the characters in the book.
Highly recommend it.

A Girl on the Train, A Woman in the Window - much the same. Predictable story attempting a touch of Hitchcock with an all too familiar ending. Frustratingly long in some places and too long for what it is.
Avoidable.
