Historia
Sherlock Holmes' relationship with the band of street Arabs, known at the Baker Street Irregulars, has largely been untold - until now. Holmes sometimes relied upon a gang of adolescent boys and girls who he recruited from the slums of London. Indeed, some of Sherlock Holmes's most bizarre cases involved the irregulars: a hideous execution of a man who had been strapped to the barrel of a cannon, a fiend who hoped he could live forever on the blood of others, and the largest jewel robbery in Britain.

One of the more interesting pastiches I've read.
Revisado: 02-09-25
I've not read many pastiches that take place post-retirement, and I feel you need a pretty compelling reason to take place during that period. That said, this one does it with fantastic results. Bringing back the Irregulars and staging an entire narrative around them was a great choice.

On the eve of Sherlock Holmes' retirement, Watson pays a final visit to 221b Baker Street. Their quiet conversation is interrupted as other guests drift in and out of the 221b sitting room.... Also included here is the account of a visit made by Holmes and Watson to Inverness and a record of a strange tale set in Borley Rectory, once believed to be the most haunted house in England.

A bit too expository, but fun enough for a light jaunt.
Revisado: 02-08-25
While I enjoy the banter back and forth in the first part of this book, it really doesn't feel like Holmes and Watson, and much of the dialogue feels overly expository. The few mysteries stuffed in the back half of this book are fun enough, though.

Was a fun book to knock out in two days. Had a good time with it and it was rather funny, but it sadly loses steam in the wrapping up.

Historia
Here are the real events that inspired Gary Paulsen to write Brian Robeson’s story in Hatchet, The River, Brian’s Winter, Brian’s Return, and Brian's Hunt: a stint as a volunteer emergency worker; the death that became the pilot’s death in Hatchet; plane crashes he’s seen; and his own near misses. He takes listeners on his first hunting trips, showing the wonder and solace of nature along with his hilarious mishaps and mistakes. He shares special memories, such as the night he attracted every mosquito in the county, and how he met the moose who made it personal.

A good addendum to the Hatchet Saga
Revisado: 04-13-23
If you finished the Brian stories and wanted a bit more backstory on the creation of the books and parts of Paulsen's life that made it into the story, you're in for a rather good treat. I could listen to Paulsen recount his stories for hours, so I guess the only knock against this book is it's too short for me.

Revisiting books from my childhood.
Revisado: 04-13-23
I remember reading this book probably in like... 5th grade? Well, it's been almost two decades since then and for some reason I thought of this book and decided to give it a re-read since I found the "Only dialogue" based writing very interesting. Surprisingly, this book holds up. It's rather funny and charming, with he narration contributing a lot of fun to the book. Definitely a fun book.

Historia
J. Edgar Hoover called the FBI the "Seat of Government", and in many way it was. He was one of the most powerful men in American history and while he was at the helm of the "Seat of Government", few dared to defy him. He was a law onto himself, the self-anointed protector of American security and virtues. Hoover's career with the FBI spanned 10 presidents, eight while he was the director. Trying to understand J. Edgar is like trying to solve a Rubic's cube with both hands tied behind the back.

Historia
In this personal, eloquently-argued essay—adapted from the much-admired TEDx talk of the same name—Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her deep understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable author’s exploration of what it means to be a woman now—and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.

The millions of people around the world who loved What If? still have questions, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the Moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on an erupting geyser? Okay, if you insist.

If I had five of these books, it still wouldn't be enough to satiate my desire to see ridiculous questions answers with utter sincerity. Book 2 delivers on sometimes getting even more ridiculous than the first, and even some truly fascinating ones like walking backwards in time. Definite recommend to anyone looking for a fun read to kill time.

Historia
In Men Explain Things to Me, Rebecca Solnit takes on the conversations between men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don't. The ultimate problem, she shows in her comic, scathing essay, is female self-doubt and the silencing of women. Rebecca Solnit is the author of fourteen books about civil society, popular power, uprisings, art, environment, place, pleasure, politics, hope, and memory, most recently The Faraway Nearby, a book on empathy and storytelling.

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

Incredible, eye-opening, and alarming data.
Revisado: 04-13-23
This book should be required reading for people looking to understand gender inequality in society. The statistics and data presented in this are, quite surprising and sometimes alarming. The most fascinating thing is that some of the inequalities aren't even intentional, just a product of not putting the thought into how something that seems equal could be the opposite. Big recommend to this book.
