Great substance, but read too fast.

Fr. Longenecker is obviously "the bomb" on the topics covered here! Both his diagnoses and his proffered cures are total bullseyes! But the speed in which he articulates these things leaves me reeling. Normally, it's great when authors read their own books because they can emphasize the things they WANT to receive emphasis. But here, for whatever reason, the delivery is so quick that there's no time to savor points that ARE worth savoring. No, the listener has to be ready for the next point, and the next, and the next. I mean, whereas some people speed up the delivery of an audiobook (I never do), when I DO go back and relisten (and I will), I'll be tempted to slow it down!

Mr. Henderson has some very compelling stories to tell … ones we should all be more familiar with.

Not just high-brow pretense, but the "down to the nitty-gritty" foundations. Very helpful!

And here are some truly hard truths. Adoption itself is hard. It's one of many "cages" we have no choice but to live in. But looking out through the bars of those cages is truth itself. Too large to remain caged.

Bullivant gives a quite credible assessment of the cultural forces that got us to where we are today. It's clear that "What happened?" rather than "Who's to blame?" was the question motivating him. I don't know, and he doesn't CLAIM to know, what that means we should do in response, but at least he's first trying to figure out exactly where we are.

My opinion is that the political health of our Constitutional system depends on the religious health of the citizenry. Thus, if our religious health continues to decline as it has, there will come a time when our political system will collapse. Whether that will take two weeks or two hundred years, I don't know. But that looks to be where we're headed. If/when that DOES happen, it's anybody's guess where all the debris will come to rest, and what might be done with it.

Meantime, you might consider praying.

Here it is. This lays out what divorce does to one. And to those around us. We face the difficulties life gives us as best we can. We have no other choice.

This guy's got it goin' on. Ignatius deserves this kind of clarity. (Reviews require at least 15 words, so here are four more: You won't be sorry.)

I went right to the last, large chapter on Rachel. For me, it was like the disciples on the road to Emmaus: My heart burned as I heard how Mary, the new Rachel, was, is, my Mother too. I cannot share all the details, but this closed some of the most important loops, and perhaps THE most important loop, in my life. It provided, provides, perhaps the most important insight into my own life, one that makes me cry to perceive it. I cannot guarantee it will do the same for you, but that's what it did for me.

The premise of this book --- that Pope Francis is, behind the scenes, a petty, South American-style dictator --- seems implausible, maybe even ridiculous, at first blush. Pope Francis? The jolly, smiling, waving, baby-kissing, poor-loving, man-of-the-people, media darling? It can't be! And yet, the evidence it presents, from inside the Vatican, is overwhelming. So many observers of this pontificate (several with impeccable credentials, even "insider" Catholic ones) have tried to stitch together a grand "theme" that animates it, or him, so they can then critique it, and him, as such. Sadly, there really isn't any such grand "theme." The only coherent, internally consistent "theme" to it is plain political pursuit, and retention, of power (and by "political" there, I mean primarily of the personal sort, the temptation to which is ever-present in the Church hierarchy, but also of the mundane governmental sort as well).

As an audiobook, it is excellent, and highly recommend for those interested. As a commentary on the state of the modern Catholic Church? Depressing. But for me, it at least "solves" the puzzle that the Francis pontificate has been.
