this story made me sad. there's very little character development. and the revelation seems to come too late. I enjoy the show adaptation much more.

beautifully written, good narrator, good story
Revisado: 06-02-21
It was not a sappy cliche love story. good and evil isnt just black and white, in the end. the spells were enchanting and the magic system wonderful. the main character well rounded and competent. very happy. I personally loved the narrators voice, which gave depth to the story and took me away to a distant land.

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

Just keep in mind that its a horror story
Revisado: 12-25-19
I almost didnt get this book because in the reviews it said that the story was about a girl in an abusive situation that came to love her abuser and lose her self.
well, that is a big part of the story. The character has flaws, but she contines to grow and develop. Not only does she suffer abuse, but also war... and magic. was not expexting that last part to become so signifigant.
there are some truly fantasy moments where you are plunged into a world of gods and magic, and there are also times when you have to cringe and just get through the sheer horror. Above all, this is a horror story , not fantasy, not romance, - there are some truly horrific concepts of war that only get darker, with a lot of trigger moments that would just break a sensitive person.
I didnt like Rin. In my opinion shes a terrible person, and as I read I always thought I wouldnt mind it if she failed or got herself killed... but she is a good character. I have read the whole series now and I can definately say that there is good character development and forward momentom with a grand conclusion.
so yeah, to summerise: It is a fantastic story, well worth the read, just keep in mind that, above all, its a horror story.

Historia
For centuries, humans and dragons existed side-by-side in Alveria, bonded by their care of one another. But no longer. After decades with no viable eggs, humans far outnumber dragons, and the survival of the species appears bleak. The outlook for everyday humans is little better as rogue dragons raid and torment villages. Yet it’s far worse for the tamers, beaten and killed simply for serving the noble dragons. But eking by at the bottom of Alverian society isn’t any easier for 17-year-old Kaelan Younger. Harder still when her loyalty to the dragon crown is no secret.

overall a good read.
Revisado: 09-01-19
if you are a young adult this book is great for you. the author explains every reasoning behind every emotion and decision at length. if you're an adult these run on can get kind of tedious. I found myself skipping past the parts of the book where the main characters over explain their thoughts.
besides that.. there's magic and dragons and budding romance. every so often there's even some twists and turns. this is very much a coming of age story. to go from child to a little more grown up at the end.
worth a read. I enjoyed this series but it was a little hard to get through.
