Historia
After losing everything in a bitter divorce, Peter retreats to a secluded cabin in the Catskill Mountains, where he is trapped by earthquakes and months of unrelenting snow. Just as he is convinced he is the only survivor of a mysterious global cataclysm, he meets a woman seeking refuge from a past she won't reveal. Her arrival rescues him from unbearable isolation, but when the snow finally stops and her secret catches up with her, Peter is forced to choose between saving her life and following his conscience.

hard to put down
Revisado: 07-15-18
i already read this on kindle a while back and loved it, but it's better now cuz i don't have to look at words..
nice post-apoc fiction with a scenario that i don't think i've seen the genre touch on all that often(nice break from the nukes and zombie outbreaks). plenty of action, romance, heroics, tension and all that keeps a good story going, while still keeping it down to earth at a halfway mellow pace, which helps extraordinary situations stay believable and gives a chance to relate to the characters.
i hadn't heard a John McLoughlin narration before this, but i think he's made it into my very short list of narrators i enjoy listening to. good performance and sound.

Historia
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

good read. i really like the format of having the characters telling the story after the fact. bit like World War Z in that way, but rather than a bunch of different people telling their bits across the globe, it's the same few main characters going back and forth. this really works to build all the characters and attach you to them.
though there are some standard tropes for this genre which may make things a bit predictable, and at the risk of a minor spoiler: you kinda know who's not going to make it by who never gets a turn to narrate, and you may occasionally get a sense of past-tense about certain characters. i don't think that took away from the story at all though. i like and am attached to the group and i'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.
also, i'm really picky about my audiobook narrators. anymore, if i find a good one i'll start buying books based on the narrator's reading list rather than the authors i like. this one is quite good and i'll be looking into what else he's done

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

good story, but glad it was a short one
Revisado: 02-21-18
got this on sale for $1, definitely worth it.
the story was good, but i don't know that it would've kept my interest at full book length so this was about perfect. Zachary Quinto did a great job and i would definitely listen to more books he narrates in the future. though he has a pretty distinctive voice, so i don't know if i would be able to picture anyone else but him as whatever main character he's speaking through. so hopefully, the character will fit him in whatever books he may do. overall, glad i bought it and wouldn't have minded paying a bit more for it.
