Historia
A visit to her local prison brings DI Vera Stanhope face to face with an old enemy: former detective superintendent, and now inmate, John Brace. Brace was convicted of corruption and involvement in the death of a gamekeeper—and Vera played a key part in his downfall. Now, Brace promises Vera information about the disappearance of Robbie Marshall, a notorious wheeler-dealer who disappeared in the mid-nineties, if she will look out for his daughter and grandchildren. He tells her that Marshall is dead, and that his body is buried close to St Mary’s Island in Whitley Bay.

development
Revisado: 07-12-24
I like the bits of character development here. Less static than the early volumes. But the performer has such limited range, especially for male characyers.

Historia
As the snow falls thickly on Newcastle, the shouts and laughter of Christmas revelers break the muffled silence. Detective Joe Ashworth and his daughter Jessie are swept along in the jostling crowd onto the Metro. But when the train is stopped due to the bad weather, and the other passengers fade into the swirling snow, Jessie notices that one lady hasn't left the train: Margaret Krukowski has been fatally stabbed. Arriving at the scene, DI Vera Stanhope is relieved to have an excuse to escape the holiday festivities.

Contrast
Revisado: 07-05-24
Fun to see what was changed for the television program. Don’t like the reader. Male characters all sound like dumb lugs. Overall narration doesn’t match earlier readers of Vera novels.

When Inspector Vera Stanhope finds the body of a woman in the sauna room of her local gym, she wonders briefly if, for once in her life, she's uncovered a simple death from natural causes. But a closer inspection reveals bruises around the victim's throat, and Vera quickly realizes she has a murder on her hands.

Balanced
Revisado: 06-28-24
More attention to Vera’s relationships with her crew, especially with Joe. And Vera’s self-loathing is more clearly tied to social norms and her father than in previous. Too many coincidences, but that’s typical of the genre and these novels,
Superb performance,

Historia
On a hot summer on the Northumberland coast, Julie Armstrong arrives home from a night out to find her son murdered. Luke has been strangled, laid out in a bath of water and covered with wild flowers. This stylized murder scene has Inspector Vera Stanhope and her team intrigued. But now, Vera must work quickly to find this killer who is making art out of death. As local residents are forced to share their private lives, sinister secrets are slowly unearthed. And all the while the killer remains in their midst, waiting for an opportunity to prepare another beautiful, watery grave....

Self-loathing
Revisado: 06-21-24
I have made it through three Vera novels and I’m done, Vera’s self-loathing is too much. She fat shames herself, validates social beauty norms rather than critiquing or rejecting their importance, judges the “happy families” falsehoods yet constantly questions not having had children. And the murder mysteries always involve aspects that bring her insecurities to the fore, Too much validation of sexism among the critical elements for me to listen to more.
The performance is superb, Great voice, nice characterizations.

Historia
It has been ten years since Jeanie Long was charged with the murder of fifteen-year-old Abigail Mantel. Now residents of the East Yorkshire village of Elvet are disturbed to hear of new evidence proving Jeanie’s innocence. Abigail’s killer is still at large. For one young woman, Emma Bennett, the revelation brings back haunting memories of her vibrant best friend—and of that fearful winter’s day when she had discovered her body lying cold in a ditch.

Women’s lives
Revisado: 06-20-24
Some interesting commentary on women’s lives, choices, and struggles in a small community. Vera has some self-loathing that I didn’t like. Would have liked more insights into characters’ responses to the reveal. I get why Vera wants to get away from the place, but it’s easier for her than the women we meet.
Narrator is ok. Too much gravel in the men’s voices.

Historia
Three very different women come together to complete an environmental survey on the Northumberland countryside. Three women who, in some way or another, know the meaning of betrayal....For team leader Rachael Lambert the project is the perfect opportunity to rebuild her confidence after a double-betrayal by her lover and boss, Peter Kemp. Botanist Anne Preece, on the other hand, sees it as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace Fulwell, a strange, uncommunicative young woman with plenty of her own secrets to hide.

Fantastic audiobook
Revisado: 06-16-24
A great audiobook. Interesting novel in its varied narrators and perspectives. Developed portraits of the main women characters and potent introduction to Vera Stanhope. A bit too tidy as a mystery, but enjoyable from start to finish.

Historia
Encompassing the 35 year span between the initial development of film technology in the mid-1890s and the adoption of synchronized sound in the late 1920s, the cinema's silent era is both one of the most important epochs of film history and one of the most misunderstood within the popular imagination. In this brief, engaging account, these formative decades come vividly to life.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Disappointed
Revisado: 08-20-22
A surprisingly linear narrative whose denouement is rather obvious and disappointing, The secondary romance plot is superficial and unconvincing, with a male love interest I found unlikeable (or perhaps just poorly written). I expected a more compelling, complex protagonist, but that was true for me of young protagonist of The Devil’s Arithmetic, too.
