Historia
After being stolen from her wealthy German parents and raised in the unforgiving wilderness of eastern Europe, a young woman finds herself alone in 1941 after her kidnapper dies. Her solitary existence is interrupted, however, when she happens upon a group of Jews fleeing the Nazi terror. Stunned to learn what’s happening in the outside world, she vows to teach the group all she can about surviving in the forest—and in turn, they teach her some surprising lessons about opening her heart after years of isolation.

A Fresh Outdoor Perspective
Revisado: 01-15-24
I really enjoyed this book, especially the outdoor setting and the perspective of a person who was raised outdoors in the forest. She had a very strong spiritual sense, and by that I mean she perceived God’s presence and was guided by his love and light. She innately understood the value of every life and shared her knowledge of the forest with Jewish refugees. This is a great story with an important message.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Historical fiction at its finest
Revisado: 02-20-23
The story starts out slow, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. As an editor and aspiring wordsmith, it was fascinating to observe the logistics behind the compilation of the Oxford Dictionary. It was fun hiding beneath the scriptorium sorting table with Esme and following her through life. I was relieved when she chose to birth her baby and hoped they would eventually meet. Esme’s end was disappointing. The Dictionary of Lost Words is a beautiful story though—historical fiction at its finest.

3.5 Stars - First of a series?
Revisado: 12-08-20
I enjoy time travel books and I like the concept of Oona experiencing her life out of order. It was an interesting storyline. However, I had a hard time relating to Oona, and also wrapping my brain around how she was able to leave herself a letter every year. The book left some questions unanswered for me. Only seven years of her life is described, so perhaps the author plans to write more? I didn’t care for the profanity, but thought the dialogue and writing was good. Seems like Oona needs more time to mature into a likable character.

A sad but strong story about survival in the face of obscene evil, a perilous journey, and hope in the safety of the United States. Perfectly written and narrated, American Dirt is suspenseful and thought-provoking. A plea for humanity among nations and neighbors.
