This was a fun well written story. Inside there’s lots of subtle discussion of concepts like imperialism, romanticism and the root of joy but it never gets preachy.

First Marin Ireland is one of my favorite narrators she does a great job.

Backman is also one of my favorite authors. Anxious People and A Man Called Ove are phenomenal. This book as an engaging and heartbreaking story. The characters are pretty good and lots of their dynamics are great. Bobo and Amet have a great story. Kira was awesome because I disliked her at first but my heart soften as we got to know her.

What I don’t like is the preaching. The author is clearly trying to get a message across but rather than letting his story do it he has the characters just say it which turns into long preachy dialogue. The bartender talking about how men are responsible for everything terrible. The coworker talking about how men always get what they want at work.

It just feels like these tirades take the powerful and nuanced message out of the story. Rather than making a complex claim about what makes good and bad men and women it feels like the author makes pretty broad strokes.

You love Ove. You love The pregnant one and the lanky one. The walking grammar anomaly and the moody 8 year old. All in all it is a great story.

The themes are interesting and I liked the symbolism of the cars all throughout. I think the author does a great job of trusting the audience to be smart enough to understand what’s going on without undue assistance.

The book looks at what happens when a society takes happiness to be the goal civilization then gives them a couple thousand years to create their Utopia. The book pulls from ideas around Huxley, to create this world. The beginnings of the sexual revolution, eugenics, secularism modern hedonism all play into this book to create the “Utopia” these people live in.

I really liked the narrator. I just sped his reading up a little bit

An incredible story of brave people. It was moving and humbling. I hear of these women’s virtues and I feel a call to be better myself. I’m a bit surprised that this was free. The reader did a good job

The book is awesome and the narrator is good. My only contention is that the analogy sometimes got repetitive. What I mean is he would repeated the same connection multiple times in the same chapter however it is still a wonderful listen and is worth the time. The best part for me was the anecdotes, the little stories throughout. I was shocked at how little knew of Leprosy and defiantly learned a lot about the human body (should have paid better attention in HS bio I guess).

My only complaint is sometimes he explains things for too long or repeatedly. Every single part of the book has useful information. Definitely something to come back to and reread. I’m buying the paper copy so I can annotate it further.

My little sister (12) recommended this to me (19 boy) and I listened because it’s one of her favorites of all time. I am clearly not the target audience it’s definitely aimed at a younger teenage girl so I tried to rate it accordingly.

That being said is did enjoy it. The world is easily the most interesting of any YA dystopian I’ve ever read. I found myself begging the narrator to move on from some of the character interactions so she could tell me more about the world. Don’t get me wrong, the characters were fun and decently interesting but not target for me.

*possible spoilers*
Lauren Oliver, if, for some reason you are reading this, please please please write a story in this world for a more adult audience. I’m not talking raunchy love story, just a little more mature book with scenes like with raid night, that level of graphics was incredibly poignant and, in my opinion, is what drove the nail in the evil of indifference juxtaposed with love. If that could be done more forcefully, even graphically, in another series… dang that would be impactful.

I was hyped for the Gents series but was a little disappointed when the first one didn’t smack that hard. Julia felt too forced. The second book in the series redeemed it for sure.

Kess is a bro if a bit awkward. His character was interesting. Eden leaned pretty hard into the guilty of one particular event a little hard and brought it up a lot in multiple subplots which was a little annoying.

Violet’s issue she had to work through was unique as far as Eden’s books go. Similar vibe to Tavish from Hope Springs but done differently enough to be a fire character.

The subplot surrounding Julia and Lucas was good, more ironed out than the first book. I can’t wait for Archbishop to have his book come out.

Overall good book.

This ties in all that has been happening for the last several years in the Lancaster and jonquil series beautiful providing Easter eggs and snapshots for the new Gents series while possibly setting up a series involving Charlie’s friends and the huntresses.

All great stuff. One of her better ones for sure.
