Which character – as performed by Jeff Hays – was your favorite?

All of them, it's a simple as that. The narrator is great and some really interesting sound editing tricks went into this one. Honestly, the voices are so distinct that I'm not convinced that this book had only one narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Took me two sittings, but only because they don't let me stay at work for 16 straight hours

Any additional comments?

It's a slightly awkward premise but really well done. Give this book a try.

My only complaint is that points where the characters are listed as a stack of numbers/traits. It was cute once, but it happens a lot and it gets old pretty quickly, especially when a small change is made and you get to listen to a bunch of unchanged numbers. For me, it takes me out of the action a little bit, though it's not enough to put me off from the series or change my recommendation.

Given that this story is set in an established setting with around 20 years of real world history it was pretty terrible to hear the narrator mispronounce everything. His cadence reminded me of an old text to speech synthesizer and his voices were just terrible. This book has been returned.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who wasn't already a fan of the series. Without the context of the rest of October's story none of the vents in the story have much impact. This is pretty normal for a book this deep into the series, but this book ties more into previous events than others in the series.

What didn’t you like about Mary Robinette Kowal’s performance?

Considering it's the 8th book in the series it was very jarring to hear Kowal change the pronunciation of some in world terms. There were also a number of errors in the performance, the wrong character's name being said, voices mixed up, etc. Seemed like this performance was done without benefit of an editor, or any particular desire to read the book.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I would not, since this book would make a pretty bad movie.

Any additional comments?

This book could badly use a rerecord, and an editor. If it didn't add so much to the series, I would say give it a pass. If you're already working through the series, just grit your teeth and try to ignore the errors in the performance.

Bronson Pinchot's reading of the Grimnoir Chronicles is what made me fall in love with audiobooks and this short story is up to the usual quality. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is its novella length, and the fact that I yearn for more novels in this series. I want to see more, and this certainly lays the groundwork for more. Sadly, I haven't seen any indication that the author might be returning to the world.
