I just can’t finish this book because I feel like the author has too much of a personal agenda that she is trying to share with the audience and it keeps taking me out of the story

Historia
Esther Larson has been cooking for funerals in the Northwoods of Wisconsin for seventy years. Known locally as the “funeral ladies,” she and her cohort have worked hard to keep the mourners of Ellerie County fed—it is her firm belief that there is very little a warm casserole and a piece of cherry pie can’t fix. But, after falling for an internet scam that puts her home at risk, the proud Larson family matriarch is the one in need of help these days.

Not the best book I’ve ever read, but somewhat enjoyable.
Revisado: 12-21-24
I’ve read many novels that I like more than this book but it definitely was an enjoyable enough story for me to get through the whole book. I found myself invested and interested in the characters and how everything would resolve in the story. It’s funny but the book really wasn’t about the funeral ladies as much as one of the funeral ladies family and some visitors to the town. So I would give it a pretty average rating.

Definitely not a favorite at our book club
Revisado: 12-21-24
It was very busy that month and was not even able to attend my book club to be a part of the discussion. I had only read about a third of it. My book club’s overall review was that it just felt more like a soap opera than a good story. Because it got such low ratings throughout the group I decided not to finish it.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Enjoyed getting a full picture of our current vice president elect.
Revisado: 12-21-24
JD Vance did an excellent job sharing with us his autobiography to date. It had wonderful and heartfelt family stories, good life lessons, and an insight on how to deal with your own sense of inferiority in life. It was enriching to read it.

When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Inconsistent with the historical autobiographies of Americans, who came out of slavery
Revisado: 12-21-24
After studying the writings of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, and knowing the history of Harriet Tubman, to name a few, James seems like an inaccurate fictional story of how African-Americans would have been during this time period. It felt more like a story with a modern agenda and less like an authentic piece of historical fiction.
