Historia
The Eternals, the ruling class of the Future, had the power of life and death not only over every human being but over the very centuries into which they were born. Past, Present, and Future could be created or destroyed at will. You had to be special to become an Eternal. Andrew Harlan was special. Until he committed the one unforgivable sin - falling in love. Eternals weren’t supposed to have feelings. But Andrew could not deny the sensations that were struggling within him. He knew he could not keep this secret forever. And so he began to plan his escape.

A classic
Revisado: 01-28-23
I’d forgotten why Asimov is the greatest science fiction writer of all time. Endlessly inventive, wheels within wheels. The reader does both an old man’s voice and a woman’s voice well.

I read this 50 years ago, and just finished listening to it with my wife on a road trip. Uplifting theme, engaging characters, good reader who voiced crotchety women as well as she did a wide-eyed girl.

Young Marjorie Clune's best asset is her greatest misfortune: a pair of exquisite legs. They attract the perfect heel, a self-professed movie promoter named Frank Patton, whose scam seems even more flawless than Marjorie's lissome limbs. When the hype clears, the local chamber of commerce is many dollars poorer, Marjorie's been hung out to dry - and Patton's been found with the knife of Marjorie's lover implanted in his chest....

A window into 1937
Revisado: 10-08-19
The book is a window into 1937 with speakeasies, cars with sideboards and cranks and engines that had to be kept warm if you might need to go somewhere in a hurry, and mail planes you could book a seat on. It’s also one of the few Perry Mason novels with no courtroom action. It was fun though and drew me along. The narrator distinguished all the characters well - he did some great voices - except for the women. I’m afraid his rendition of Della Street took some getting used to.

Historia
A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

Entertaining, not so hardcore
Revisado: 07-26-16
An engaging prequel to the Fire and Ice saga. There's lots of room for sequels, and I hope Martin writes them...after he finishes the Game of Thrones series.

Well-developed characters facing tough situations. World-building to rival Tolkien. No bad language or sex scenes to make you cringe when you realize your listen is being overheard.

Robin Hobb is at her best when channeling FitzChivalry. Some really tense moments made all the better by the slower parts that delineated characters and relationships so masterfully.

A Classic
Revisado: 03-30-15
The story features a hypersensitive protagonist with a lot of internal dialogue. A psychological thriller as much as a haunted house story.
The narrator's tone was appropriate, but I had some trouble distinguishing the voices of two of the female characters.

Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release.

Colin Firth is great
Revisado: 02-21-13
A story about the nature of love - self-love, romantic love, selfless love - and about sacramental Christianity. It's set in England during World War II, and the characters are very real and very well realized. Where the novel goes at the end is completely unexpected and, in fact, made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
Colin Firth gives life to the introspective and often unpleasant narrator. He may be the best reader I've ever listened to. I especially liked the way he handled a woman's "voice," which he had to keep up for a good bit of the story. Often, men don't handle the voices of women very well.
