Unfortunately I think the author should have stopped after The Silent Patient (if you haven’t read that, you definitely should read it instead of this one).

Historia
A house perched impossibly on a cliff overlooking the stunning, iconic Bluebird Beach. Prime real estate, yet somehow not real estate at all, The Lodge is, like those who live in it, falling apart. Gordon Grimes has become the accidental keeper of this last relic of an endangered world. He lives in The Lodge with his wife, Kelly, who is trying to leave him, their son, Ben, who will do anything to save him, his goddaughter Lou who is hiding from her own troubles, and Leonie, the family matriarch who has trapped them here for their own good.

What a cracker! A hilarious, heartwarming, & heartbreaking tale about the Australian dream. The main narrator is exceptional, he’ll have you in the palm of his hand in no time.

Historia
Three brothers, one death, a fenceline stretching to the horizon. Two brothers meet at the border of their vast cattle properties under the unrelenting sun of outback Queensland. They are at the stockman's grave, a landmark so old, no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron. The Bright family's quiet existence is thrown into grief and anguish. Something had been troubling Cam. Did he lose hope and walk to his death? Because if he didn't, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects....

Another winner by Harper!
Revisado: 11-29-18
Harper has delivered another winner, it's definitely up there with The Dry. I bet you won't guess the ending. I loved the various mythologies of the Stockman's threaded throughout the narrative, and that fact it centres around a family without the intermediary of a detective.
My only gripe is the narrator. I know that Harper herself raves about him, and he does do an excellent angry, menacing male Aussie voice, but neutral narration and petulance seem to exhaust the rest of his range. He's not a deal breaker, but definitely have a listen before you buy.

To be admired by someone we admire - we all yearn for this: the private, electrifying pleasure of being singled out by someone of esteem. But sometimes it can also mean entry to a new kind of life, a bigger world. Greer Kadetsky is a shy college freshman when she meets the woman she hopes will change her life. Faith Frank, dazzlingly persuasive and elegant at 63, has been a central pillar of the women’s movement for decades, a figure who inspires others to influence the world.

Excellent, excellent, excellent
Revisado: 06-06-18
I'm devastated to have finished this outstanding book I loved it so much! However, I just came across a review that compared the novel to a combination of cotton candy and red meat, which changed my devastation into anger. What exactly is it about relationships, identity, ambition, idealism, power, betrayal, love, corporate corruption, death, loss, women's lives, men's lives, how we understand ourselves and one another that is "cotton candy"?
This is *the* book for 2018. Do not miss it.

Which character – as performed by Juanita McMahon – was your favorite?
Wil Ransom.
Any additional comments?
This book bursts with colour, creativity, passion, history, intelligence, unique characters, and strong women. Perry is obviously an extremely learned writer, and one who is no less engaging for being so. I am totally flabbergasted at the negative reviews here. This is something bordering on a masterpiece; we don't often see such novels written these days. At its heart is a meditation on faith and reason, which might sound boring, but Perry truly makes it fascinating, seamlessly embedding it within the interactions between characters as she does. If it makes a difference to potential readers, I love both contemporary and classical fiction. I enjoyed the first half, but don't think I was completely hooked until the second. It was definitely worth hanging in there. There are some truly breathtaking passages especially towards the end of the novel. Enjoy!

This is the first Rankin I've read & I probably should've started with something earlier, because this was a lazy, predictable novel.

Phenomenal
Revisado: 05-10-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is one of the best books I've ever read, and, as a bibliophile, I do not say this lightly. Murder, revenge, love, deceit, betrayal, dastardly characters, innocent and charming characters; an epic, cinematic novel.
I have no doubt that Eleanor Catton's novels will become future classics, staples on every book lover's bookshelf. I have already recommended this to numerous friends, who are unanimously in awe of Catton's genius.
Listening to The Luminaries being read by Mark Meadows was an exquisite joy. Meadows as a narrator is unmatched, in my opinion. He switches seamlessly between a vast range of accents, the most impressive of which are probably Maori, Chinese, Norwegian, and German, although the spectrum of his English accents is amazing.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Emery Staines. I've never read a character quite like him. You can't help but be charmed and bewitched by him.
Which character – as performed by Mark Meadows – was your favorite?
I loved listening to his performance of Harald Nilsson in particularly. Such a subtle accent.

Historia
Few people serve time in prison before studying at Cambridge. You might be surprised to know that Stephen Fry is one of them. Moab is My Washpot, the remarkable story of Stephen Fry's tumultuous early life, is by turns funny, shocking, tender, delicious, sad, lyrical, bruisingly frank and addictively listenable.

Listen to the Fry Chronicles First / Instead
Revisado: 05-30-11
If you're interested in Stephen Fry, start (and perhaps also finish) with the Fry Chronicles instead (Fry's autobiography of the second twenty years of his life). While Fry narrates both autobiographies exquisitely, Moab is My Washpot (of his first twenty years), is less interesting and calls for a good reining in and editing (even more than the Chronicles). The most interesting part, for me, was his account of how thoroughly he was tormented by his inner-devils as a child and adolescent, and how completely he screwed his life up, and then how he took control of his life and made such a success of himself. Parents and teachers take note that Fry leaves no details out of his early sexual experiences, from his more solo adventures to a rather worrying deflowering by an older boy at school. Probably more for die-hard Fry fans.
