Just so very good
Revisado: 06-10-16
The stunning 3rd volume of the series by this much under-appreciated writer packs a massive emotional punch. The understated artistry of the writing is the driving force here, and is marvellously served by a very fine narrator.

In which we are drawn by narrative threads so finely wrought as to miss them all by the end of the novel, and wish to hasten on. Adored.

Historia
Set on the French Riviera in the late 1920s, Tender Is the Night is the tragic romance of the young actress Rosemary Hoyt and the stylish American couple Dick and Nicole Diver. A brilliant young psychiatrist at the time of his marriage, Dick is both husband and doctor to Nicole, whose wealth goads him into a lifestyle not his own, and whose growing strength highlights Dick's harrowing demise. A profound study of the romantic concept of character - lyrical, expansive, and hauntingly evocative.

Not my favourite Fitzgerald
Revisado: 05-25-16
I didn't love it. It felt melodramatic and over written. More especially I felt the narrator entirely wrong for this period. She should stick to reading chick lit. She's a technically good narrator - apart from her icky accent work - but she added to the sense of the overblown that tended to dominate. Average only.

The bridge between the past and the present
Revisado: 01-21-16
The third novel in the Neapolitan quartet acts as something of a bridge - between past and present; even between two kinds of living - the old ways and the new. Intriguing and unresolved, the rush to read the final installment hastens on.
