Poorly written. Poorly narrated
Revisado: 01-27-25
Really disappointing. Kept listening hoping at some point it would find it's groove but it never did. Under developed characters (who are unlikable), predictable plot and over all bad writing. The narrator might be trying but ultimately is as dry and boring as the book itself.

It is a quest that will challenge Peter's beliefs, his understanding of the limits of the human body and, most of all, his love for Bea.

This book had a few interesting concepts, none of which were explored. The ending was particularly poor, I think a better ending May have saved the book, unfortunately not the case.

I really enjoyed this, did not expect to at all.
Revisado: 01-08-15
What did you love best about Big Little Lies?
I go through a lot of audiobooks and podcasts. I usually listen to them when i drive so will often make last minute purchases before i leave for a long journey, and don't always do a lot of research on a book before i purchase it.
I am so glad i did that with this book. I had it in my head when i started the book that it was a murder mystery, (i normally read SF so thought i could stretch to this genre), and in a way it kind of was, but mostly it was just about likeable characters going about their everyday lives. I am surprised at just how much i enjoyed the book and felt it was consistently strong throughout with a solid ending.
I really enjoyed the narrator, although others i have recommended the book to have said they found her to be annoying so i guess not for everyone,
Actually just wish the book was longer.
Any additional comments?
It is very good. considering I normally consume only scifi and fantasy I was surprised at how much i did enjoy this book. Get it, you will enjoy it.

Nothing new, but entertaining enough.
Revisado: 01-08-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Depending on how widely read the friend was. This book does nothing wrong, but the tropes are well explored by many novels before it. The allusions to the 80s was an odd flavour in the mix, which I think would ultimately work better as a movie or TV show.
It reminded me of the YA novel\serries The Web: Dreamcastle, which i would probably recommend as a more fulfilling starting point.
Would you be willing to try another book from Ernest Cline? Why or why not?
I think so, it was entertaining enough.
Was Ready Player One worth the listening time?
Yes. I enjoyed it, and perhaps it could even have been longer.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

that ending...
Revisado: 01-08-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
listening to another book.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
There were a few clever moments where the antagonist was one step ahead.
Any additional comments?
I hated the narrators. They both had a certain whiney American accent that wasn't helped at all by some of the worst prose this side of the Twilight novels. Both characters were unlikable in the extreme, and the damn ending was... not great.
I watched the movie after finishing the book (also screen written by Gillian Flynn) which did a better job of the pacing, and tightened up a few of the dumber actions by the antagonist - but the terrible prose, unlikable characters and that damn ending made it just as bad..
not for me.

A strange take on an otherwise simple story.
Revisado: 01-08-15
What did you like best about My Real Children? What did you like least?
I liked the alternate history elements mentioned in the background of the main story, The main story itself, both Pat and Trish was engaging enough, but slow paced and without tension. The ending was ultimately unfulfilling, and i would have enjoyed some kind of exploration into the "why" of the parallel worlds. Was a little depressing overall.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jo Walton? Why or why not?
Probably not, a little substanceless and slow paced for my liking. not a bad book overall however.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Alison Larkin?
yes. she did a good job.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Loved them all
Which scene was your favorite?
There were a few that had me completely engrossed and listening at every given minute.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
