Historia
The works of J.R.R. Tolkien are quite possibly the most widely read pieces of literature written in the 20th century. But as Professor Michael Drout illuminates in this engaging course of lectures, Tolkien's writings are built upon a centuries-old literary tradition that developed in Europe and is quite uniquely Western in its outlook and style. Drout explores how that tradition still resonates with us to this day, even if many Modernist critics would argue otherwise. He begins the course with the allegory of a tower....

Loved it!!!!!!
Revisado: 07-17-15
Professor Drout put into words everything I've always felt about Tolkien, and backed it by his own deep knowledge of the subject.
It is also well read and highly entertaining.
I recommend it for any Tolkien fan

Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

Excellent narrator for the most boring book ever
Revisado: 07-16-15
This has got to be one of the most tedious, over-descriptive, slow-moving books ever. If it had been edited and published today, it would probably be 80% shorter.
The story is actually a good one, and the narrator is superb, but the plot line gets lost in endless digressions that really tried my patience and perseverance.

Charting the evolution of technologies from the knife and fork to the gas range and the sous-vide cooker, Wilson offers unprecedented insights.

This book really blew my expectations. I love her comfortable style of writing and her witty comments. As I listened to the different chapters, I felt this incredible connection to her as a fellow lover of food. Really worthwhile, my only complaint would be that it did not come with attached pictures of the described contraptions.

Historia
Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us - an ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from leather-aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings. In best-selling author Walter Isaacson's vivid and witty full-scale biography, we discover why Franklin turns to us from history's stage with eyes that twinkle from behind his new-fangled spectacles. In Benjamin Franklin, Isaacson shows how Franklin defines both his own time and ours. The most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself.

Good book, not crazy about the narrator
Revisado: 07-20-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, if they are interested in learning about the founding fathers and in the life of scientists.
What other book might you compare Benjamin Franklin: An American Life to and why?
Washington: A Life. They are comprehensive biographies that portray their subjects as actual humans, with virtues and flaws, and make you feel close to them, their way of thinking, and how they became great historic icons.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
While his tone and articulation were very good, I cannot say the same about the frequent "mouth" sounds throughout the narration. You can hear him stopping to drink water, swallowing, and making other sounds that are distracting, annoying, and a little disgusting. I know that your mouth can become dry from narrating such a long book, but I have listened to the George Washington biography, Herman Wouk's Winds of War, and other equally long books, without these "sound effects".
I think the narrator was good, but the sound production team could have worked better at filtering the sounds.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Not as good as Tom Sawyer, but worth reading
Revisado: 06-26-13
If you could sum up Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Signature Performance by Elijah Wood in three words, what would they be?
Great performance by Elijah Wood, the story was just OK.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The most interesting was the personal story and relations of Huck Finn. The least interesting was the endless narration of interactions with characters around the river, which have nothing to do with the main story. It felt at some points as if the novel was just a vehicle to write a history book on the Mississipi, with losts of mini-stories embedded. This made it a little boring. It does get much better at the end when Tom shows up.
Which scene was your favorite?
I would have to say when Tom Sawyer shows up and all the tricks they play on his Aunt.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No.

Good book, nice narration
Revisado: 06-26-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, the story is interesting, the writing very beautiful, and the narrator was good.
What about Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance did you like?
I liked the young, innocent tone to the narrator's character. It sounded very believable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The final reflection comparing life in the east and west. It was read with particular authenticity and delivers the author's sentiment perfectly.
Any additional comments?
I had never read the book. I enjoyed it very much, it made me want to keep hearing it and finished very fast.

Great biography of Washington!
Revisado: 06-26-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Washington: A Life to be better than the print version?
Yes. Long biographies tend to be tiring, and having it read so nicely makes you move on and not leave it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Washington: A Life?
I loved to hear about his human relationships, his flaws and personality quirks. It really made him come alive.
What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The tone, when referring to historic milestones, really transported me to those times and the people's sentiment.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A legend, an icon, a real man.
Any additional comments?
Excellent portrait of the person George Washington was, a true, living, breathing person as opposed to a picture on a dollar bill. Very complete biography of an outstanding human being. It also portrays a very complete description of the century, and the relations between nations at the time. I enjoyed it very much.

Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

What made the experience of listening to A Dangerous Fortune the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed the story. As in other books, Ken Follett is great at characterization and you can really feel the book's heroes and villains come alive. The multiple plots, twists, and points of view are always entertaining and keep you listening. The setting in 19th century England is interesting, and it provides good insight into the banking world.
