Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Great book!
Revisado: 03-08-25
Really good story and a great use of mystery drawing you on. I'm looking forward to the next book and really hoping the magic system is explained more in the next book. I do wish though that the author hadn't told the whole story in the 1st person present tense.

Historia
"Present day conditions," writes Pink, "call loudly for a new examination and new presentation of God's omnipotence, God's sufficiency, God's sovereignty. From every pulpit in the land it needs to be thundered forth that God still lives, that God still observes, that God still reigns. Faith is now in the crucible, it is being tested by fire, and there is no fixed and sufficient resting place for the heart and mind but in The Throne of God.

Determined to Believe is written for those who are interested in or even troubled by questions about God's sovereignty and human freedom and responsibility. John Lennox writes in the spirit of helping people to get to grips with the biblical treatment of this issue for themselves.

A Straw Man Army
Revisado: 02-21-25
The author either does not understand what Calvinists believe or he repeatedly misrepresents their beliefs on purpose throughout this book.
His pattern of argumentation is to present something he says Calvinists believe (usually skewed enough from what they actually believe to sound extra repulsive), then to take moral issue with that view and say something to the effect of, "that seems morally wrong of God, so this passage must mean something other than what Calvinists say, because God isn't immoral." And then say that the obvious conclusion then is that the passage means just what he says it means.
I came to this book expecting a well reasoned argument for the non-Calvinistic perspective, but what I found was a host of straw men. One has to wonder, is the position the author is defending so hard to defend that he has to face off with straw men almost the whole time instead of engaging with what Calvinists actually believe?

In Hunt, Gather, Parent, Doucleff sets out with her three-year-old daughter in tow to learn and practice parenting strategies from families in three of the world’s most venerable communities: Maya families in Mexico, Inuit families above the Arctic Circle, and Hadzabe families in Tanzania. She sees that these cultures don’t have the same problems with children that Western parents do.

overall I enjoyed this book. Good reminder to lower the volume. this helps me too.
Revisado: 10-28-24
I don't agree on story telling scary things like spiders and monsters. Even if it works it is a Fear-power parenting like the Inuit and many other cultures. although they are used to it, when the Gospel enters their lives we are to be free from fear and therefore this parenting, although effective, brings fear as well as obedience.

Revisado: 04-24-23
Seriously! There should be some indication that there are sex scenes in a book! Not everyone wants to sully their minds with imagining and hearing stories of other people (even made up ones) having sex!

Huge disappointment. Great story until two girls started making out. Seriously, there should be some indicator of stuff like that being in a book. It is so disappointing to get multiple hours into a book only to have the whole thing ruined by such disgusting imagery!

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Well written, but dissatisfying ending
Revisado: 09-04-22
A well communicated idea within a novel, but the book never turns up at the end. We naturally long for happy endings and this book doesn't have one. Other than that, very well done.
