Historia
This powerful, intensely dramatic book is the definitive account of the Haitian Revolution of 1794-1803. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of master toward slave was commonplace and ingeniously refined. And it is the story of a barely literate slave named Toussaint L'Ouverture, who led the black people of San Domingo in a successful struggle against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces and, in the process, helped form the first independent nation in the Caribbean.

Heroically narrated, with appropriate bias
Revisado: 05-18-24
Not a sterile retelling of a military struggle between countries, but a rousing account mettle and a fight for the right to be human by the Haitians. Essentially reading for every West Indian, African, African-American. A roadmap to continued liberation.

Historia
Everyone needs to love and be loved - even men. But to know love, men must be able to look at the ways that patriarchal culture keeps them from knowing themselves, from being in touch with their feelings, from loving. In The Will to Change, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are - whatever their age, marital status, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

The most gentle destruction
Revisado: 11-22-23
As usual, hook’s voice is unapologetic without being snarky or cruel. She addresses the issue of patriarchal masculinity from both sides, and from its factual base. As a male who has never considered myself a feminist, I deeply respect her ability to reach me wherever I am. Not only does she speak on the subject, but she provides clear, actionable solutions- and even addresses how to clear the obstacles to implementing the solutions. Methodical, soulful, and foundationally loving- I found myself more seen in this book than I’ve ever been by those who know me. Great for men to read, great for women to read.

Historia
Since it was first published more than 25 years ago, Robert Fitzgerald's prizewinning translation of Homer's battle epic has become a classic in its own right: a standard against which all other versions of The Iliad are compared. Fitzgerald's work is accessible, ironic, faithful, written in a swift vernacular blank verse that "makes Homer live as never before" ( Library Journal).

Great Story
Revisado: 05-25-23
Narration is the highlight here. A clear voice which can be perfectly understood at very high speeds. The language used in the book is simply beautiful. Very worth it to listen to.

Was hoping for a better, more realized version of the film
Revisado: 12-31-22
Starts off strong. Descriptions are helpful in understanding the mentality of the characters, the force, and the context of the plot. Details that definitely should have been in the movie. Unfortunately, the final act is just as rushed and paper thin as the film. Suddenly you get no more explanations or details. Just “they fought.” Disappointing finish to what could have been a great book. Can’t recommend it any more than I’d recommend the film.

Fair, Brave, and Well-Cited
Revisado: 12-13-22
Reader is great, understandable even at higher speeds. The book itself has insights that lean scientific, but not purely atheistic. The book serves as a gateway to observing our natural tendencies with a critical eye. Worth a read!

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

I feel like I read something I wasn’t meant to
Revisado: 07-14-22
I’ve never come across a piece of literature so intimate. As a mixed race man in his 20s from an American city, I couldn’t be farther removed from an Irish man growing up in the 1950s. Yet I was completely, utterly consumed by every minute detail of his life as if it were mine. I couldn’t tell you what this book was about, but it was thrilling. So intense I felt my heart could burst. The vocal performance was tremendous- one of the best. I could also listen to it clearly at 2.3x- if that matters. Please read this one. I think it has matured me. I think it could humble almost anyone.
