So boring.
Revisado: 02-09-23
I purchased this title after reading the first couple of reviews which were overwhelmingly positive. I wish I had kept reading. This story never got off the ground for me, and may be Stephen King shouldn’t narrate his own books. I couldn’t separate him from his character, and, listening to him talk about his sexual responses was TMI. There were so many superfluous details in the story, and I didn’t even really know what it was about until the very very end. But that didn’t redeem all the hours of wondering WTF?

Where’s the story?
Revisado: 02-05-23
These two women spend so much time joking and laughing that they don’t get to the actual content. I don’t care about them, I tune in for the advertised topic. Sadly, I was too annoyed to keep listening to see if they ever got there.

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

Favorite King audiobook and best narration
Revisado: 08-14-22
Beautiful, haunting, and moving story brought to life by Michael Kelly who narrates the character of Dev to perfection. The plot is interesting and fun - takes me back to summer vacations and the simple joy of theme parks-but it's Mr. Kelly who catapults this title to the top of my audible favorites. His depiction of the sweet, heartbroken and thoroughly delightful Dev is the best. And the way he voices Mr. King's masterful language of the old-time carnies is uproariously funny. Plus we get a ghost story! I would have liked for the ghost story to be a bigger part of the plot, but getting to spend 6 hours with Dev and the gang is delightful. Mr. King - please write more for Mr. Kelly to narrate!

Wow! Don’t miss this one. I won’t forget these characters for a long time, and I’ll never think of immigration the same way. Deeply moving.

Historia
Kirsten Hammarstrom hasn't been home to her tiny corner of rural Wisconsin in years - not since the mysterious disappearance of a local teenage girl rocked the town and shattered her family. Kirsten was just nine years old when Stacy Lemke went missing, and the last person to see her alive was her boyfriend, Johnny - the high school wrestling star and Kirsten's older brother. No one knows what to believe - not even those closest to Johnny - but the event unhinges the quiet farming community and pins Kirsten's family beneath the crushing weight of suspicion.

This book caught my attention right away and didn’t disappoint. I found myself looking forward to continuing the story after a break. That was welcome as I’ve picked some duds lately.

What’s with the narrator?
Revisado: 01-24-19
Maybe I would have enjoyed this book in print, but I couldn’t get past the narrator’s elderly-sounding voice when many of the characters were young moms. There were a lot of characters, and it took me quite a while to keep straight the storyline of each because they all sounded like grandmas. Then, in crazy twist -no spoiler- the narrator reading the epilogue had this very young, clear voice. Why didn’t she use that voice for the young women characters?? And the child with the lisp - like fingers on a chalkboard. Finally, I did not enjoy the use of the Berlin Wall as a literary device. Felt old and dated and irrelevant. Blech! All that said, at least the “secret” was not what I expected, and I could hear the talent of the narrator-her dramatic pauses and variations in volume were excellent, but not enough to keep me hooked.
