Historia
It’s 1942. German Nazis occupy much of France. And twelve-year-old Miriam, who is Jewish, is not safe. With help and quick thinking, Miri is saved from the roundup that takes her entire Jewish neighborhood. She escapes Paris, landing in a small French village, where the spires of the famous Chateau de Chenonceau rise high into the sky, its bridge across the River Cher like a promise, a fairy tale.

Historia
They are Hazel, James, Aubrey, and Colette. A classical pianist from London, a British would-be architect turned soldier, a Harlem-born ragtime genius in the US Army, and a Belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice and a devastating past. Their story, as told by goddess Aphrodite, who must spin the tale or face judgment on Mount Olympus, is filled with hope and heartbreak, prejudice and passion, and reveals that, though war is a formidable force, it's no match for the transcendent power of love.

Lovely Story, Beautifully told!
Revisado: 07-31-21
This historical fiction, like all of Julie Berry's books is beautifully written. It tells the story of two couples through the Great War through the eyes of the Greek gods. It is a creative literary tool to share the horrors of and opportunities in war. I love Berry's prose and the way she captures her characters with clarity and affection.

Historia
The fateful first meeting of Enza and Ciro takes place amid the haunting majesty of the Italian Alps at the turn of the last century. Still teenagers, they are separated when Ciro is banished from his village and sent to hide in New York's Little Italy, apprenticed to a shoemaker, leaving a bereft Enza behind. But when her own family faces disaster, she, too, is forced to emigrate to America. Though destiny will reunite the star-crossed lovers, it will, just as abruptly, separate them once again....

A remarkable story of courage and pluck reminding
Revisado: 04-08-19
This story of Italian immigrants who came to the USA at the turn of the 20th century reminds all of us that our country was and continues to be built on the shoulders of hard working people looking for a better life. Chero and Enza are characters to love and fall in love with again and again. The author has a strong grasp of human nature and beautifully crafted a novel that is rich with "truth" in the framework of real history. Three cheers for The Shoemaker's Wife.

Historia
Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book might have been a revelatory treatise on plant life. Lab Girl is that, but it is also so much more. Because in it, Jahren also shares with us her inspiring life story, in prose that takes your breath away.

Amazing writer and astonishing story!
Revisado: 08-22-18
Hope Jahren crafts a masterful account of her own life brilliantly spaced among some of the most beautiful descriptions of the plant processes of the natural world that I have ever read, and as a professional horticulturist/arborist, I have read a few. Her mastery of the language is exquisite and a joy to read. A captivating and memorable account that I have already gone back to several times.
