The characters are old friends that remain fresh and new
Revisado: 11-29-24
The plot is a bit redundant, but the reader still is compelled to keep on in a rush to see what will happen. I love the frequent bits of history an physical descriptions of the characters.

Engaging Indian Trilogy beautifully performed
Revisado: 07-06-24
This is a multi generational epic of modern India. It has enough drama and lightness to offer good storytelling. Like all good Indian novels, it ignites sensual sights, abound, smells, and tastes.

How can a murder mystery be so fun?
Revisado: 06-02-24
I am plowing through the Wild Fen series. It is getting a bit redundant, but it is an easy listen. Even the most irascible characters can be charming. Clever who-done-it.

Historia
American women—American wives—have been mostly minor characters in the literature of the Vietnam War, but in Absolution they take center stage. Tricia is a shy newlywed, married to a rising attorney on loan to navy intelligence. Charlene is a practiced corporate spouse and mother of three, a beauty and a bully. In Saigon in 1963, the two women form a wary alliance as they balance the era’s mandate to be “helpmeets” to their ambitious husbands with their own, inchoate impulse to “do good” for the people of Vietnam.

Real and raw, sweet and touching
Revisado: 04-22-24
When you read Alice McDermott, you prepare to be saddened. The realism hits home right in the gut and the heart. A brilliant writer, particularly clever with dialogue, McDermott taps into our mother’s generation and writes a book set in Vietnam that is not about Vietnam. It lays open the lives of women who have been sidelined by society, making the reader feel as if they are right there with them.

First published in 1963, James A. Michener's gripping chronicle of the social and political landscape of Afghanistan is more relevant now than ever. Combining fact with riveting adventure and intrigue, Michener follows a military man tasked, in the years after World War II, with a dangerous assignment: finding and returning a young American woman living in Afghanistan to her distraught family after she suddenly and mysteriously disappears.

Great story told in the backdrop of 1946 Afghanistan. Gives one insight and perspective to how ancient history is relevant to modern politics.

Witty premise, interesting characters, and beautiful descriptions, but this book never grabbed me. I am not a fan of the supernatural. It amused me but overall left me cold.

Historia
The year is 1921. Lesley Hamlyn and her husband, Robert, a lawyer and war veteran, are living at Cassowary House on the Straits Settlement of Penang. When “Willie” Somerset Maugham, a famed writer and old friend of Robert’s, arrives for an extended visit with his secretary Gerald, the pair threatens a rift that could alter more lives than one. Maugham, one of the great novelists of his day, is beleaguered: Having long hidden his homosexuality, his unhappy and expensive marriage of convenience becomes unbearable after he loses his savings—and the freedom to travel with Gerald.

Lush and evocative writing
Revisado: 03-04-24
The author ticks off each of the senses, one by one, to make the reader feel as if you are truly there, no matter how exotic the locale. This novel is not the speedy page turner of the author’s previous work. It is more of a languid ride through an engrossing story. It weaves real characters with fictional ones through three different time periods in truly enjoyable and beautifully narrated book.

Historia
Violette Toussaint is the caretaker at a cemetery in a small town in Bourgogne. Casual mourners, regular visitors, and sundry colleagues - gravediggers, groundskeepers, and a priest - visit her to warm themselves in her lodge, where laughter, companionship, and occasional tears mix with the coffee she offers them. Her life is lived to the rhythms of their funny, moving confidences. But her routine is disrupted by the arrival of the local police chief, who insists on scattering the ashes of his recently deceased mother on the gravesite of a complete stranger.

Sweet and strong main character with some interesting minor characters.

Twice as long as it needed to be. The story was sappy. The narrator was all wrong for this story. She could not properly pronounce any of the French names and words. Her voice was to young and too high.
