I dislike writer’s who cannot express a concept without using excessive foul language. It is lazy and unimaginative.

Madcap comedy of errors.

Put The Christmas Hirelings, Mr. Malcolm‘s list, Cary Grant, Shirley Temple, and Charles Dickens in a bowl and mix them up and you will have this novel. I found it a delightful story.

Excessive profanity took the “Hygge’ out of this.
Revisado: 11-24-22
The cover and the name led me to believe this would be a lite, fun, little Christmas story but the excessive use of the F-bomb and other profanity took away my expectations. It could have been better with some editing. Sorry but no hygge here.

Maddie Sykes is a burgeoning seamstress who’s just arrived in Bright Leaf, North Carolina—the tobacco capital of the South—where her aunt has a thriving sewing business. After years of war rations and shortages, Bright Leaf is a prosperous wonderland in full technicolor bloom, and Maddie is dazzled by the bustle of the crisply uniformed female factory workers, the palatial homes, and, most of all, her aunt’s glossiest clientele: the wives of the powerful tobacco executives.

I enjoyed everything in this book, The descriptions of the fashions, the young romance, the fight for right against big industry. My Mother smoked throughout her pregnancies and lost four babies to premature birth before she suspected a connection and quit. Wonderful first book by Adele Myers, hope to see more.

George MacDonald Fraser, author of the Flashman novels, praises this hearty saga as "one of the great unrecognized novels of the 20th century." Doctor Peter Blood's quiet life is shattered when he is convicted of treason for helping a wounded nobleman in the 1685 rebellion against King James II.

Rafael Sabatini is an excellent writer who can capture the excitement and adventure without resorting to foul language and overly graphic gore that modern writers will often resort to. I thoroughly enjoyed this swashbuckler.

6 hour story line stretched to 9 hours.

I loved the characters, the locations, and the narration but it seemed like the author repeated the same scenario multiple times just to fit in different locations. It became too repetitious. Would have been more enjoyable if the main story had moved along a little quicker.

Could have been a cute story, but.......
Revisado: 12-14-19
Dear Keeland and Ward, My advice to you is to go back to school and reread Jane Austen. She does not need her male characters to have twitching in their pants, tongue down the throat kissing, etc to be true heartthrobs. I also could do without the needless swearing. Throwing in a lot of "what the F" just makes you a lazy writer. This story had good bones but too many cringe-worthy moments to be really enjoyable.

Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

Everything I like in a book!
Revisado: 10-04-19
I enjoyed everything about this book and the narration. Jamie painted a clear picture of what the Japanese Americans had to endure without going so far down that rabbit hole that it detracted from the rest of his family relationships saga.

The movie was better
Revisado: 12-01-18
It is really unusual for me to read a book after watching the movie but I really enjoyed the film Crazy Rich Asians and thought I would listen to the whole series. I was so disappointed that Mr. Kwan couldn't find a better use of vocabulary to discribe his characters personalities than the CONSTANT use of the F bomb, and OMG and other vulgarities. Even his main charater, Rachel, who is supposed to be a kind, educated, mature young women hurls the F bomb at her own mother. Too much foul language for me to enjoy the story.
