Historia
Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society's mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

unbelievably cruel

*spoilers*
First off I did not like the way that the author likes to torment the reader. It feels like the author gets some kind of sick thrill out of torturing people. There are large sections of this story that were painful to get through.
But the absolute worst is having the characters make their plans and then go about them without giving the reader any clue of what was happening. I understand some level of deception and wanting to build tension and keep secrets, but this degree of it felt lazy, cruel, and ultimately false and unbelievable.
The ending being the most egregious example of this.
We are supposed to believe that was all part of their plan. that they really thought that in order to get to the sovereign that was the best way to do it. I do not believe it for a single moment. That was not a plan it was a suicidal hail Mary that had no chance of working. That we are supposed to believe any of that was in any way possible is utter nonsense. I nearly stopped reading this trainwreck when the "betrayal" happens. The fact that the inner monologue of darro is written in a deceptive manner to make you think it was unplanned is just unnecessary and felt like the author wanted us to just suffer. The last hour of this book was agonizing. I was just angry and finished it mostly from spite more than anything else. The big reveal at the end was incredibly hollow, it just felt impossible and incredibly contrived. The way this book ended has completely ruined this series for me and I will not be reading any further.

The action begins in the heart of Iran, where billions of dollars are being spent on the development of a nuclear program. No longer willing to wait for the international community to stop its neighboring enemy, Israel launches a creative and daring operation that leaves a radioactive tomb in the middle of Iran's second largest city. An outraged Iranian government publicly blames both Israel and the United States and demands retribution.
