Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Historia
Populist rage, ideological fracture, economic and technological shocks, geopolitical dangers, and an international system studded with catastrophic risk—the early decades of the 21st century may be one of the most revolutionary periods in modern history. But they are not the first. Humans have lived, and thrived, through more than one great realignment. What makes an age a revolutionary one? And how do they end?

A Measured Study of Revolution and Backlash
Revisado: 05-20-24
As always a great book by FZ. Insightful and calm. He just has a fantastic way of explaining trends and putting them in historic context. That being said I would not say the last few chapters stuck to the "revolution" title. As FZ sometimes does in his books, if the "theme" is too constrained he is all to ready to jetison it so he can pontificate on whatever topic he wants. That's OK since I love to hear his thoughts about alot of things. Must be very liberating to not have to stay the course when many just like to hear you speak.

He took a subject that could be arcane and remote and made it alive. His passion for history and interest in the common man was fantastic to hear. Thank you for that.

Scaachi Koul deploys her razor-sharp humor to share all the fears, outrages, and mortifying moments of her life. She learned from an early age what made her miserable, and for Scaachi anything can be cause for despair. Whether it’s a shopping trip gone awry; enduring awkward conversations with her bikini waxer; overcoming her fear of flying while vacationing halfway around the world; dealing with Internet trolls, or navigating the fears and anxieties of her parents.

Life as it is
Revisado: 01-10-24
Enjoyed it thoroughly. Great insight to what I see as somewhat typical experiences of a first generation child of immigrants. I say this because I've had similar stories as the son of Cuban immigrants. You end up living on the border of two worlds not belonging fully to either. Thank you for writing this book.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

When an industrial accident unleashes an "airborne toxic event", a lethal black chemical cloud floats over the Gladneys' lives. The menacing cloud is a more urgent and visible version of the "white noise" engulfing the Gladneys - radio transmissions, sirens, microwaves, ultrasonic appliances, and TV murmurings - pulsing with life yet suggesting something ominous.

Historia
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

Get a solid working knowledge of the spiritual beliefs that unite and divide us - as well as the perspective from the other side of these divisions. These 24 lectures offer you an opportunity to gain a solid grasp of the key ideas of religion itself - the issues that repeatedly surface when you look at any faith's beliefs, practices, and organization. Using five major religions - Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism - as illustrations of how religions can address the same core issues in parallel and different ways, Professor Kimball leads you on an exploration of religion's complex and multidimensional nature.

Just a Lot of Fluff Not serious
Revisado: 06-22-22
This was a terrible disappointment and not a serious attempt to understand the world as it may be in 2041. The author believes technology will solve all problems and create very few. A complete failure to really understand the affects of technology on society and society's affect on technology. He has veen drinking the Kool-aid served in Silicon Valley. I'm no Ludite but the belief that by 2041 computers will displace doctors is just nuts. The author, who is a technologist himself unsurprisingly believes the technologist will rule supreme. The author's conclusions at the end represents some political agenda that is simply naive. I wanted to learn and came away with nothing. Haven't been this disappointed in a book in a very long time.
