Historia
The young king of Navarre and three of his courtiers have vowed to lock themselves away for three years of study and fasting, and to forswear the company of women for this period. No sooner is their vow made than it is tested, however, as the princess of France and three of her ladies arrive in Navarre on a diplomatic mission. The young men fall instantly and hopelessly in love, and the tension between their vow and their passion forms the subject of this charming and sparkling early comedy.

Performance great, but not Shakespeare's best
Revisado: 09-02-18
I went to see this play up in Oregon, and I have to say that this Audible performance was so much better than the live play up there. It was a great way to preview the book, and to understand everything first. This was so much better than the live performance that I will always listen to Audible's Shakespeare first. Very well done. As far as the story goes, it was OK, but other comedies like As You Like It, Twelfth Night, or Midsummer Nights Dream, for example, are much better.

The best "zombie" story ever, Not stupid
Revisado: 09-02-18
You'd think that a story involving a dead-but-alive person would be really stupid, but the characterization is so well done that it really gets interesting, and even believable. "Stony" is a hero that you root for on page one and continue for the rest of the novel. It's super entertaining, and wonderful for a teen to adult audience. David Marantz does his narration job well.

Historia
In a quiet room in the White Swan Inn, sunlight slowly breaks through the curtains, revealing two young lovers - an American seamstress and an English officer. They have been brutally, ritualistically murdered in their sleep. It is a grisly scene that can mean only one thing: There is a traitor within the American Revolution.

The Traitor is a super-excellent spy story !
Revisado: 08-25-18
The Traitor is a wonderfully written spy story, with edgy, real-life characterizations. This MA in English Literature rates this 5 stars. You can't get any better than a writer like Dan Sherman, who has been writing since he was a 7 year old, and it shows. Not only is this one a great story, with tons of twists and turns, it is a well-researched, and that makes it a fantastic story that one can learn a lot from just by reading it. Way to go Mr. Sherman. I can't wait for your next book. I've read everything you've written, and I've learned a lot about the iron curtain and Europe, in wartime and peacetime, and all those facts you've inter-woven into your books that changed history. Anyone reading these stories will gain wisdom and that's really saying something!

Fantastic Writing! Ari Fliakos is also excellent
Revisado: 03-25-18
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It's great writing. I have a PhD in English Literature, and I reccomend this book to anyone who wants to listen to excellent writing and character development. It also is wonderfully easy to understand and follow in the Audible format.
What did you like best about this story?
The way the author weaves all the different characters into one suspenseful story.
Have you listened to any of Ari Fliakos’s other performances before? How does this one compare? Ari Fliakos is the best narrator and reader ever! HE truly is amazing!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not really, but truthfully I was immediately amazed at the incredible writing. It truly is one of the best modern books I have ever read, and that's saying something!
Any additional comments?
Gregory's use of verbs and descriptions, as well as his incredible ability to weave a great plot, is extraordinary. It deserves a prize for fiction.

Historia
John Polly enters Shanghai in 1948 on a muggy, velvet evening, just in time for the Communist takeover of China. It marks only his fourth month in America's newly formed Central Intelligence Agency. Over the next two decades, Polly will become The White Mandarin, a double agent buried so deep within the inner circle of the People's Republic as to shape the futures of both that nation and his own.

Best Ever Spy story set in China.
Revisado: 08-24-16
Where does The White Mandarin rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The Best! It's the number one spy story I ever read. This does not include Shakespeare, of course. I have a special affinity to his work. However, Jules Verne, was also extremely fun to listen to, so I'd have to rate him at the top as well. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea put me to sleep every night in a wonderful way. Still, Dan Sherman is becoming my number one go to author for spy stories. He is a wonderful writer.
Who was your favorite character and why?
John Polly, I believe, because he was a gentle soul in the midst of all the outrageous goings on in the secret world. Spies were dealing not only with US, Russian and Asian relations, but with the drug trade.
Which scene was your favorite?
The one in which John Polly first meets Kim and falls in love with her. After she is killed, I love the way he goes after the guy who did it and kills him right there in the street, without a thought for himself or what will happen to him. He is a very likable character.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES! But I also wanted to savor it, so I listened to it slowly over the course of a few days. I also listened to it more than once.
Any additional comments?
It was really well researched. It is almost as if the author, Dan Sherman, is Chinese himself, but he isn't. He is an American. The book has so much Asian flavor, and it really puts you there, right in the midst of the world of spies and espionage. It also is told over a span of 50 years, so you get the gist of the history too. What is really amazing is that The White Mandarin hasn't yet been made into a movie. It deserves to be.
