Historia
In a world where female sailors are executed, 16-year-old Lane's dream of being a ship's captain seems impossible. Sea life is all she knows, and she wouldn't give it up for anything, even if it means she has to hide as a captain's boy to avoid being killed. But Lane's carefully constructed world begins to crumble when an old pirate enemy comes after her father. And she begins hearing rumors that her father was once a pirate as well.

Fun Book, Not as Pirate-y As I Hoped
Revisado: 07-19-23
I bought this because I met the author at a book signing and she was so sweet and the book seemed interesting. I enjoyed this book and thought the setting and the romance were fun. My one gripe with the book is that there are SO MANY last minute revelations in the last 45 minutes of this book it's ridiculous. There are at least four Big Reveals, and three of them happen in the last ten or so pages of the book.
It was a fun adventure, and I do appreciate that it appears to be a stand alone. We need more stand alone books. I can't commit to a whole series all the time. This was perfect for getting me back into reading.

Perfectly Sweet
Revisado: 12-09-22
It was sweet, it was cute, it was Christmas-y, it was a great, quick holiday read. I'm a sucker for a good "Trapped in an Airport During Christmas" trope and this one had everything you'd want. There's interpersonal family drama, there's running around an airport at midnight, there's a grumpy Santa. It's thoroughly enjoyable and well acted by the narrators.

As the political climate grows more unstable, the world is forced to consider the ramifications of granting human rights to nonhuman persons. How do you define “person” in the first place?

If that one character death hadn't happened, I would have liked this more. I felt like that character's story was so interesting and I wanted more from them.

Revisado: 08-30-20
I think, in the end, that world building I was hoping for in this was too much. We had a pretty solid beginning, with a setting that was perfect for a vampire story... and now all of a sudden it's like the author was like, "Okay now that your belief is suspended, HERE'S ALL THIS OTHER LORE TAKE IT ALL."
And I didn't like that.

A very enjoyable romp through space, with an enemies to lovers romance, a ragtag group of misfits becoming a family, political conspiracy, and some serious Firefly vibes.

Revisado: 08-30-20
This book had some good ideas, but the execution wasn't the best. Still an enjoyable read for me and I'm looking forward to the sequel (even if I was a little put out about the cliffhanger. I thought this was a standalone okay?)

Kind of Disappointing
Revisado: 08-30-20
I'm giving this three stars, even though that feels kind of generous just because this book had so many solid, interesting ideas. The problem is, none of them really reached their full potential.
The first like, third of this book is solid. It sucked me in, and I was invested. But after that, it kind of fell apart on me. Which is so sad, because dark fairy tales are my JAM and I really wanted to like this book.
I liked the twist of who Alice is, but the way the author handled everything after that was just kind of... boring? I feel so bad saying that because, like I said, this book has such an amazing concept and some really great ideas. But I doubt I'll be continuing with the series. I was left with no great desire to find out what happens next.

Might Be The Best One
Revisado: 08-30-20
I was pleasantly surprised by this book, I really wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. But I loved the new characters, I appreciated the development with old characters which, quite frankly, made them much more likable than they were. Now I actually care about them.
Yrene Towers is a great addition to the main cast and, honestly, is the only reason I went and bought the prequel novellas. I love her. She's great.
The plot was interesting, and held my attention, and this book could almost have been a really interesting stand alone (which, I understand, was Maas's original intention) save for one incredibly important reveal.
All in all, I honestly think this might be the best book of the series?! Which I did not expect at all, but I'm totally fine with.

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Couldn't Finish It
Revisado: 08-30-20
Okay so I /really/ wanted to like this book but I've tried and I just can't get into it. Usually if I don't finish a book I give it one star if I rate it at all just because if I can't finish a book it means I really, really do not like it and can't get into it. But this idea had so much potential! I liked the concept, and when I first tried to read it, I enjoyed the characters, I just found the writing detached and dry (which was probably a send up of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writing style, but I could still connect with Conan Doyle's writing. I tried with this, but I couldn't.)
This time, though, I just found the main character to be annoying, and the fanfiction element really stood out more to me than it did during my first read. And not in a good way.
I love the idea of Holmes meeting his intellectual match, especially in a young girl, but this is just not what I wanted. I can understand why people would like this book, but it really wasn't for me.
I might give it another try in the future, but I'm not sure I'll ever have the patience to finish.
