Historia
Ancient Egypt. Land of the Pharaohs. A kingdom built on gold. A legend shattered by greed. Now the Valley of Kings lies ravaged by war, drained of its lifeblood, as weak men inherit the cherished crown. On the eve of the festival of Osiris, the loyal subjects of the Pharaoh gather in Thebes to pay tribute to their leader.
Exploding with all the passion and rage of a bygone time, River God is a masterpiece of historical writing.

Strong historical adventure
Revisado: 04-10-25
The main character Taita is an enthralling invention. His voice and his foibles make for an excellent narrative. Smith is outstanding describing battles and action scenes, and just as good with descriptions of Egyptian life. His statements about the history and society of ancient Egypt are somewhat dated now since there has been many advances in the excavation and understanding of that fascinating civilization in the ladt 30 years. The River God is still a wonderful, fast paced adventure.

Rousing adventure, compelling characters
Revisado: 03-25-25
Andre Norton writes well plotted adventures with sympathetic heros. In The Beast Master the main character is a far future Navajo working out his trauma from a galactic war while exploring an exotic planet, solving a mystery, and saving the day. The treatment of the Navajo is respectful and appropriate. It's short by current standards, but excellent. The narrator does a great job of differentiating the various charactrrs. His narration lends appropriate tone to the variety of scenes.

Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Historia
In 1822, a secret family moves into a secret cabin some thirty miles northeast of Baltimore, to farm, to hide, and to bear ten children over the course of the next sixteen years. Junius Booth—breadwinner, celebrated Shakespearean actor, and master of the house in more ways than one—is at once a mesmerizing talent and a man of terrifying instability. One by one the children arrive, as year by year, the country draws frighteningly closer to the boiling point of secession and civil war.

Historia
Composed toward the end of the first millennium, Beowulf is the elegiac narrative of the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel's mother. He then returns to his own country and dies in old age in a vivid fight against a dragon. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on in the exhausted aftermath.

Historia
In the sulphurous The High Place, the amoral hero Florian enters the sleeping-beauty story and (unlike Jurgen with Helen) does not draw back at the sight of excessive beauty. Complications ensue: Beauty is realistically diminished during pregnancy, the first-born child is forfeit to Satan under the pact that guaranteed Florain's success, and an irascible saint is eager to call down holy fire on transgressors. Florian treads close to damnation and is saved only when Satan and the angel Michael conspire to let recent events become, again, a dream: he has a rare second chance and learns better.

Historia
Leslie Marmon Silko's sublime Ceremony is almost universally considered one of the finest novels ever written by an American Indian. It is the poetic, dreamlike tale of Tayo, a mixed-blood Laguna Pueblo and veteran of World War II. Tormented by shell shock and haunted by memories of his cousin who died in the war, Tayo struggles on his impoverished reservation. After turning to alcohol to ease his pain, he strives for a better understanding of who he is.

Intriguing idea, dull middle
Revisado: 08-11-24
The narrator did a great job with accents and pacing. The central idea that drives the plot isn't new, but the author generally does interesting things with it. The beginning and ending are strong both in terms of plot and character. Unfortunately there's a large section in the middle while the main characters are in Russia that just isn't very interesting. The author decides to devote the middle to the discussion of philosophical and ethical questions, but just doesn't make the discussion compelling.
