Historia
A psychologist specializing in near-death experiences, Dr. Joanna Lander has spent two years recording the experiences of those who have been declared clinically dead and lived to tell about it. A new doctor has arrived at Mercy General, one with the power to give Joanna the chance to get as close to death as anyone can. Dr. Richard Wright has come up with a way to manufacture the near-death experience using a psychoactive drug. Dr. Wright is convinced that the NDE is a survival mechanism and that if only doctors understood how it worked, they could someday delay the dying process.

Was this book really written by Connie Willis author of what about the dog?
The narrator has only one, maybe 2 voices. Both made me scream

Another female narrator who can't do male voices
Revisado: 01-28-22
This is a case of a female narrator ruining a good story. She simply can not do male voices. In fact, she can only do one or two different female voices. She attempts male voices by growling, lowering her pitch or raising her volume. She seems unable to change her voice.
The story itself is excellent with interesting sentient aliens and planets. It was only the interesting story that made me endure the narrator.

Perfect in every way except it ends after his second year of presidency. Takes us behind the scenes of major happenings during his campaign and early presidency. Apparently there will be a volume 2.

Historia
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world. But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

I liked the narrator
Revisado: 11-28-20
Follows the lives of two people who made a deal with the devil. Addie wishes for freedom. She can't die, heals instantly, stays young. But no once can remember her the second they stop looking at her. She can't say her, write, draw, type, use a cell phone or do anything that might leave a mark. But she's free.
Henry wishes to be loved. Everyone loves him at first sight. But he's only going to live months.
I didn't like any character in the book except the Devil (the Darkness). I had no sympathy Addie or Henry and didn't care what happened to them.
The prose is good and so is the narrator. The story is cliche. Predictable. Uninspiring. Provokes no thoughts.

Historia
Welcome to Sunder City. The magic is gone, but the monsters remain. I'm Fetch Phillips, just like it says on the window. There are a few things you should know before you hire me: 1. Sobriety costs extra. 2. My services are confidential. 3. I don't work for humans. It's nothing personal - I'm human myself. But after what happened, to the magic, it's not the humans who need my help.

Author as narrator
Revisado: 07-30-20
I generally steer away from author narrated books because they are often bad. It's like arguing your own case in court. Doesn't usually work out well. This time it worked out very, very well. He's Australian (I googled him) so likely has that accent. He does a wide range of voices in varying accents to perfection.
Mankind (humans, dogs, cats, horses) causes magic to suddenly disappear from the world. The world becomes ugly. The gnomes, elves, wizards, and all creatures with magic suddenly suffer dire consequences from its loss. Fetch Phillips is an alcoholic depressed human detective looking for a missing vampire and siren. (yes, that kind). He is the first person narrator. He's brutally honest.
I loved Black Sails. I loved/hated John Silver, a main character. I didn't connect the author/narrator with his role as John Silver until halfway through the book.
My one criticism is the narrator speaks too fast. I slowed the narration to 0.9 speed.
Luke Arnold is a superb actor, writer and narrator. Looking forward to more from this talented young man.

Love This Series
Revisado: 05-20-20
This is the second book in the Her Instrument series. I absolutely love this series and have listened to it over and over. It has spaceships and romance and aliens and fighting and diversity of characters. The captain of the merchant spaceship Earthwise is a blue-eyed chocolate skinned female human Martian. Set in the Pelted universe where animals have been blended with humans and dominate the universe. The reclusive Eldritch are white-skinned long-lived beautiful aliens. l enjoyed all of the narrations except the captain's voice which was a bit gravely for a woman's voice. These books would make a great movie or TV series.

Every Character Sounds the Same
Revisado: 04-10-20
Many of the characters are introduced in first person. The narrator seems to use the same voice for each character. I gave up after a few chapters of this. Too hard to distinguish who's speaking when everyone sounds the same.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Zachary Quinto, Please narrate more books.
Revisado: 04-07-19
There are certain narrators that make even a bad book sound good. Fortunately, this is a great story by a great narrator. The story opens in an OR scrub room where an insurance company has placed an observer.Quinto's polite, soothing, calm, trustworthy, intelligent voice immediately draws me in. I like that he does the many women voices without resorting to falsetto. He changes cadence, tempo, timber, volume seemingly effortlessly. I immediately did a search for anything else he's narrated. Meanwhile the story builds into something I never saw coming.
