A valuable point overstated
Revisado: 12-27-24
The idea of the book is good, it’s just overstated. The contents of the book could’ve been a pamphlet rather than a book. It’s just the classic, “Find something bigger than yourself to live for the second half of your life.” I appreciate the emphasis on serving God, but I think the content could have addressed various ages who might be looking to live a life, focused for Christ, even while in the hustle of those younger years. It’s a good book for businessman, but not so good for people in ministry who have literally devoted their life to a bigger purpose as an occupation. After reading the book, I wonder if we should divide it into halves or if quarters would be more helpful.

Historia
John Crist wasn’t always recognizable as “the guy from that hilarious video in the grocery store.” Growing up part of a homeschool family of ten in rural Georgia with Mennonite grandparents and a high-school job at Chick-fil-A, he was an unlikely candidate for internet fame. Despite all that, or perhaps because of it, Crist passionately pursued his dream of stand-up comedy. In Delete That, Crist takes responsibility for his actions, offers some reflections on how to do better, and encourages us all to stop capitulating to the fear of “But what will they think?!”

Glad He Wrote This Book
Revisado: 06-20-23
I have seen John in person and really appreciate his comedy. I always love books that knock a “celebrity“ off their pedestal, specifically when they knock themselves off. It goes to show that we all have a backstory that we hope no one finds out. But then again, the real healing doesn’t happen until it does. Thanks for sharing John!

Historia
Is it possible to disagree politically and love unconditionally? The reaction of evangelicals to political and cultural shifts in recent years revealed what they value most. Lurking beneath our Bible-laced rhetoric, faith claims, books, and sermons is a relentless drive to WIN! But the church is not here to win. By every human measure, our Savior lost. On purpose. With a purpose. And we are his body. We are not in it to win anything. We are in it for something else entirely. That something else is what this book is about.

Every Christian in America Needs This
Revisado: 06-01-22
With our morally declining culture and hostile political environment, Christians need to be reminded what following Jesus really looks like. We try to tag "Christian" on a lot of things that aren't Christian and Andy reminds us what winning really looks like for believers. Excellent book!

How Do I Know If I'm Really Saved

Historia
Some people think that salvation is merely about meeting the minimal entrance requirements needed to get into heaven when they die. But that’s not how Jesus talked about it. Rightly understood, salvation is an invitation to know God and to experience his presence, favor, and power starting right here on earth. Best-selling author John Ortberg dispels the myth that eternal life is something we can only hope to experience after we die; recaptures the New Testament definition of salvation, eternal life, and the Good News of the Gospel; and explains what it really means to be a disciple.

Not For The Struggling
Revisado: 06-05-20
If you are struggling with assurance of your salvation, this may not be the answer you are looking for. I love John Ortberg as an author and he always makes me think. He also usually makes me laugh as well. This book offers excellent contrasts between “easy believe-ism” and true Christianity, But I would guess that most people won’t walk away from this work knowing more clearly whether they truly are saved or not.

Most Encouraging Book I’ve Read
Revisado: 02-27-20
This book was a tremendous blessing and encouragement to me in a time of doubt and depression in my relationship with God. The author gives tremendous biblical and personal references in this practical guide to fully experiencing the love of God. Because I often struggle with doubts I think I will read this book every January from now on. Many thanks to the author for this wonderful book!

Not as encouraging as I had hoped
Revisado: 06-19-19
I had hoped and assumed (wrongly) that this would be a book of practical help, and encouragement to those who struggle with assurance and joy. Sadly, The book does quite the opposite. A pastor friend who has read this same book came away with the same impression. After reading the book, I came away feeling “less saved“ that I was before. That of course isn’t a theological statement but an emotional one. The writing style is a bit archaic, but some might find it classical instead of outdated.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 09-22-18
This book is more descriptive then prescriptive. It was comforting to know that other people go through very similar things. Carry shares some helpful tips on dealing with each of the seven issues. There is very limited scripture even though the focus is mostly for Christians. I would have liked to have seen more biblical examples. It’s a quick read (listen) and Carey Does a pretty good job reading it. Pete
