Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Good lord – was that an amazing book.
Revisado: 08-11-12
What did you love best about Beautiful Ruins?
Poignant because of its painful searching for the balance between what is desired and what is right – and the assertion that happiness occurs whenever the two are closely aligned.
What did you like best about this story?
There was so much in there – from the flailing desire of Shane, to the raw unshackled ambition of Michael Dean, to the quiet integrity of Pasquale. Being able to bring together a broad range of characters into a symphonic whole sets this apart from everyday fiction.
What does Edoardo Ballerini bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The Italian spoken conveys emotion - that wouldn't be gleaned otherwise - a great performance.
If you could take any character from Beautiful Ruins out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Richard Burton.
Any additional comments?
The final shining moment was poetic. Hey Jess Walter, what are you? Some kind of “epiphany junky”?
