Great follow up to a dark epic fantasy
Revisado: 12-30-22
I received a free audiobook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you enjoyed book one (The Crucifix Dagger) but wanted a bit more sex, violence, and dark tidings, then A Murder of Crows will definitely satisfy. Like Book 1, each chapter begins by clearly establishing the POV we'll be seeing the story through, which continues to work effectively to piece a story together from different angles.
It's curious because the tension between the main characters you feel so often in Book 1 comes and goes in Book 2. There's a better understanding among them it seems? What returns are packed action scenes with all manner of deaths, from blade to fire to spells to swallowing heinous liquids to sacrificing in all its shapes and forms.
Once again, Dallas Munger does a pretty awesome job with the voice over work although some female voices were a bit off putting since it's obviously a man doing a female's voice, but other than that, solid all the way through.
As far as tempo and rhythm, this is a quicker burn than Book 1 though it still takes its time to paint quite the picture...which includes visiting a town that's basically infected with a plague...except not everyone knows they're infected. Hell, it's anyone's guess who's alive or dead at one point.
Of note that I did notice was that Jean-Car was relegated a bit and barely made it into this mostly Talian centered story. Don't worry, Slasher has PLENTY of time in the book, but for Jean-Car, I didn't feel it as even. Also, and this could be pure speculation, but it almost feels as if this and book 3 could be two halves of a book? I'm not sure but will find out soon when I dive into the third book to see what's what and who's going to die.

Historia
Hailed by literary critics as the inventor of modern-day horror, H. P. Lovecraft is the cultivating force behind such modern writers as Robert Bloch, Wes Craven and Stephen King. The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, Volume One is a collection of his best-known tales narrated for the first time by Wayne June and includes both "The Dunwich Horror" (published in the summer of 1926) and "The Call of Cthulhu" (published in the summer of 1928).

For those who like their horror slow burning
Revisado: 12-15-19
To me, HP Lovecraft is next level when it comes to reading things that stick in your brain and make you feel uncomfortable. This audiobook had 2 of my favorite stories and one that although I do like and enjoy, isn't on my top list from Lovecraft.
The stories I am enthralled with are the Rats in the Walls and The Music of Erich Zann. The Shunned House is also very good but wouldn't make my top 10 tales of Lovecraft. Seeing the description for this audiobook and what I listened to, there might be a disconnect in the stories included, but getting the right edition is a bit tricky, so sorry for that.
All that aside, these tales have that olds chool feel where you better not have a rush to do anything. They expand and are weaved at a chill pace, slowly but surely picking up in pace. Most Lovecraft tales are like a locomotive, they start slow and pick up speed until you need to see what happens in the end. There is a LOT of exposition but you're not here for a thrill ride... you're in a slow crawling haunted house and you never know when he's going to hit you.
Wayne June's voice is perfectly suited to tell these tales and his performance throughout is spot on. My only complaint would be that I would have turned the echo/reverb in his voice down ever so slightly. That's it. I think he did a phenomenal job and should be the benchmark for anyone who wants to read horror.
The docked star is more a comment to Lovecraft's work rather than an individual appreciation of this collection. There are only 3 stories and there are other stories that I think are the best Lovecraft has to offer. That said, if you want a slow burn tale that will creep you out, this collection is awesome.

The more I know Neil, the more I know myself
Revisado: 08-26-17
I think we're all allowed one favorite in each categories of things that mark our lives. Pearl Jam is my favorite band. IPA is my favorite beer. I'm too moody to only pick one type of red wine as my favorite though. That said, Big Trouble in Little China is my favorite movie. Sometimes we choose our favorites and sometimes our favorites choose us. Neil Gaiman is my favorite author. More then being the mos talented author, I insist on saying he's my favorite... because the more I read him, the more I understand that what I do as a writer is the right thing. He doesn't pander or preach, he doesn't expect worship or shy away from giving praise... he's a nice guy. A nice guy with a wicked imagination and a writer voice that speeks to so many parts of me, that sometimes it's scary. Even those parts that I keep hidden. He speaks to them. Not many people get to know those parts. Those broken mosaics within. But he somehow connects. So he became my favorite... and I know I'm not alone. But that's okay, because we all have the right as well as the opportunity to enjoy him and his words. This is a lovely collection of non fiction pieces, read by Neil himself. They're real, honest, and make no attempt to cover but the exact opposite. He reveals who he is and somehow in that act, we find a bit of ourselves. I was debating whether to give this book 4 stars or 5. I don't want to seem skewed or influenced... but influence he does, and influenced I am... because I am able to choose favorites... and Neil is mine.

In the good old days, magic was indispensable - it could both save a kingdom and clear a clogged drain. But now magic is fading: drain cleaner is cheaper than a spell, and magic carpets are used for pizza delivery. Fifteen-year-old foundling Jennifer Strange runs Kazam, an employment agency for magicians - but it’s hard to stay in business when magic is drying up. And then the visions start, predicting the death of the world’s last dragon at the hands of an unnamed Dragonslayer.

Although the story was a wonderful experience with twists, turns, and surprises, a huge round of applause is due to Elizabeth Jasicki who narrated with such flow and style that she made the experience that much better. DEFINITELY a title to recommend to someone who wants to give an audiobook a go
