Historia
Adichie illuminates a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra’s impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in southeastern Nigeria during the late 1960s. We experience this tumultuous decade alongside five unforgettable characters: Ugwu, a 13-year-old houseboy working for Odenigbo, a university professor full of revolutionary zeal; Olanna, the professor’s beautiful young mistress who's abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm; and Richard, a shy young Englishman infatuated with Olanna’s willful twin sister Kainene.

Superbly written and informative
Revisado: 04-26-23
The best writers can turn tragedy into art, art that can make the unbearable bearable and give hope for human happiness in the worst circumstances. With this book, Adiche enters the ranks of such writers. She depicts characters, emotions, landscapes and heart-stopping events in beautiful and moving detail.
The narrator's voice is expressive and articulate.

Narrator did a wonderful job with the online game and Twitter scenes. I had no trouble following the chat strings. Author handles Robin and Strike's relationship perfectly.

Disappointing in the end
Revisado: 04-20-22
Interesting setting, good but somewhat simplistic gender politics. As a chocolate lover, I was hoping to learn more about cacao production, but this part of the novel was superficial. Cumbayah ending is more suitable to YA readers than to full adults. I found the first two-thirds interesting, but the promise was not fulfilled.

Historia
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

The Hero's Journey meets Picaresque road trip
Revisado: 03-29-22
At first I didn't like this novel, mainly because the troublemaker Duchess kept sending the two heroes (Emmet and Billy) off course, endlessly deferring their arrival in California. Eventually I gave in to the flow and thoroughly enjoyed the adventures (while still frustrated by the roguish Duchess). Towles creates wonderful characters: 8-year old Billy, who functions as historian, mathematical genius, and moral center of the novel; Sally,, who refuses to be left behind in Nebraska to cook and clean for her father, and as helper functions like a modern day Nausikaa from the Odyssey; Woolly, whose intent is always good but who follows different intellectual/imaginative paths from "bormal" people. Even Duchess, the thorn in the novel's side, is given depth and sympathy. Minor characters like Ulysses the hobo and Professor Abernathy the storyteller are also fascinating characters. The story is beautifully constructed.

Elementary-school humor harms interesting plot
Revisado: 01-04-22
I am halfway through, and I think I will stop here and never find out who done it. The interesting plot is ruined by un-funny humor mocking body shapes, choice of underwear, clothing and nakedness. (Some characters think that a naked body is the most disgusting thing imaginable.) There is bathroom humor involving a porta-potty. The main character is ex-CIA and scares witnesses into talking by nastily suggesting she will use CIA techniques against them. Violence is in the atmosphere, as when Fortune tells a witness/suspect that if he troubles the injured mother of the sheriff by telling her the truth about her husband, the sheriff will rightfully shoot him. Huh? I just can't bear listening to the unkind banter. i rarely return audio books, but this one is going back.

Historia
A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home.

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Historia
The poems of the Poetic Edda have waited a long time for a modern English translation that would do them justice. Here it is at last (Odin be praised!) and well worth the wait. These amazing texts from a 13th-century Icelandic manuscript are of huge historical, mythological, and literary importance, containing the lion's share of information that survives today about the gods and heroes of pre-Christian Scandinavians, their unique vision of the beginning and end of the world, etc.

Dark, dark, dark
Revisado: 10-10-19
These poetic tales are full of violence, revenge, hate, and only occasionally love. I have Norwegian ancestry and was dismayed to discover the culture apparently produced by the hard life in cold northern countries. The poems are fascinating and well read, and those who are not horrified by the violence will find them quite engrossing.

Beautifully written, humerous, and very violent
Revisado: 05-07-19
Gorgeous performance by Samuel Jackson. Brilliant writing by Himes is marred by excessive violence. The best thing is that it is a story about Harlem with 99% of the characters black. Victims, villains, police. A refreshing perspective.
