Historia
Jeff Guinn, chronicler of the Southwestern US and of American undesirables (Bonnie and Clyde, Charles Manson, and Jim Jones) tells the “riveting and supremely entertaining narrative” (S.C. Gwynne, New York Times best-selling author of Empire of the Summer Moon) of Pancho Villa’s bloody raid on a small US border town that sparked a violent conflict with the US.

Fascinating history, decently told
Revisado: 06-04-24
The strength of this book is that it covers a portion of history rarely talked about in general settings. I found it fascinating to learn more about ongoing tensions between the US and Mexico past the war. I knew the Germans appealed to them but did not realize we were close to another war with Mexico prior to WWI. It was interesting to learn the background of Pancho VIlla, who was for me just a reference in Westerns. It was also interesting to discover the involvement of Pershing and Patton in the conflict with Mexico.
Curiously, the narrator consistently mispronounced the word, "adjutant."

Historia
Dr. Whitfield is looking forward to a sabbatical year of peace and quiet, gardening in his backyard, and tinkering with what he calls his latest "unpublishable book". As the year begins, he is drawn by a series of seeming coincidences into involvement with a group of characters from across Europe, including a family that has been the target of assassination attempts by unknown powers. During his journey to Romania, the situation in which he finds himself becomes more sinister than it first seemed.

Fascinating, intelligent story
Revisado: 07-17-23
This is a fun interweaving of philosophy, history, and suspense, a mysterious action novel that raises the ultimate questions about life and humanity. The reading, though, was not great. The voices the reader used for children and young men were pretty bad. This is probably one to read rather than listen to, because there is plenty of richness and enjoyment in the story.

Historia
The last battle burned the planet to a charred husk, and civilization is nothing more than a few scattered tribes...like the surviving corps of elite killers who served the old dictatorship....or the sadistic bands of motorcycle hoods, prowling the ruins for victims...or the slavers, mutants and madmen preying on those who hope to rebuild the future. Only a brave handful like Logan and his family, who are the hunted in a world of vicious predators, hope to save the strange and bloody land that is Logan's World.

This story isn't nearly as good as Logan's Run, making me think the loss of the co-author was significant

Historia
At age 24 Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal, he had to do something spectacular on the battlefield. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.

Candice Millard knows how to write history! Well told, subtle, gripping, making her points without overly intruding into the story. And Simon Vance's reading is great

Good story not a great performance
Revisado: 08-02-17
The story starts slowly but in the end is a profound examination of how easily we slide out of civilization into savagery. We need reminders of how fragile civilization is.
The reading is by the author but it is not real clear. It is one of the lesser readings I have found on Audible, though his brief reflections on the book at the end of the recording are interesting

Historia
First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

Historia
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

Nicely read!
Revisado: 03-02-14
The story itself is pretty dismal as Hemingway chronicles the emptiness many of the Lost Generation found. The narration by William Hurt, though, is great! This narration really enhances the reading of the book as he captures tone and emotion. The Scottish accent (Mike) is really well done and the humorous exchanges between Bill & Mike come across especially well.

Historia
James M. McPherson, professor emeritus of U.S. history at Princeton, is one of the foremost scholars of the Civil War. In this informative and meticulously researched masterpiece, he clarifies the differing ways of life and philosophy that led to this shattering conflict. Abraham Lincoln wondered whether "in a free government the minority have the right to break up the government". And Jefferson Davis felt "forced to take up arms" to guarantee states' rights.

Helpful book, not great narration
Revisado: 02-02-14
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I was not satisfied with the narration. Ther were long pauses at odd places and at times it was unclear if a certain clause went with the previous sentence or the following one
Any additional comments?
It would be quite helpful if the "chapters" of the audio version matched the actual chapters of the book.
