Historia
Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Sesali Bowen learned early on how to hustle, stay on her toes, and champion other Black women and femmes as she navigated Blackness, queerness, fatness, friendship, poverty, sex work, and self-love. Her love of trap music led her to the top of hip-hop journalism. But despite all the beauty, complexity, and general badassery she saw, Bowen found none of that nuance represented in mainstream feminism. Thus, she coined Trap Feminism, a contemporary framework that interrogates where feminism meets today's hip-hop.

Feels Like Home
Revisado: 09-05-24
This book feels like a love story. It feels like warmth from your old scratchy blanket; like the discomfort is comforting.
There might be the misconception (and is) that this book has a targeted audience but in reality, it's for all women across the spectrum. Everybody can see themselves in this space Sesali has created. It is honest, raw, poignant, and necessarily uncomfortable at times. That challenge of discomfort is needed for the learning and growth process. Sesali is in fact challenging the readers to grow without chopping at your heels too painfully. She's like an older cousin keeping it 100 with you and doing so in her own voice is the perfect combination of 'hear me + see me + see yourself.'
I'm tryna be like Sesali when I grow up (though I'm older I think). She has much to teach and I'm here for all of it!

Historia
Cinnamon Jones dreams of stepping on stage and acting her heart out like her famous grandparents, Redwood and Wildfire. But she’s always been theatrically challenged. That won’t necessarily stop her! But her family life is a tangle of mysteries and secrets, and nobody is telling her the whole truth. Before her brother died, he gave Cinnamon The Chronicles of the Great Wanderer—a tale of a Dahomean warrior woman and an alien from another dimension who perform at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.

Wildly Imaginative & Inspiring
Revisado: 11-30-23
I loved this story and it's meant working parts. I mean, you gotta keep up cause there's a lot happening. But it's rich and wild and intriguing and even inspiring. I can't imagine what other beautiful things the author might think up! I'd love to meet the main character as an adult.
