Beautiful Odyssey of Characters
Revisado: 07-17-22
This is my first book by Sean Dietrich and I immediately added some of his others once I finished it. I loved the unique characters, the story development that followed each on their own journey, and the fact that the story culminated in a beautiful ending that brought it all together. It grabbed me from the first chapter and kept me coming back to finish it within a few days.

Great Beach Read
Revisado: 07-17-22
This book was truly unique and fun. I loved the premise, the characters were well written, and the ending totally satisfying (if a little predictable - as any good beach read should be).

Historia
Eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a big favor to ask her hairdresser, Dorrie. She wants the black single mother to drop everything and drive her from Texas to a funeral in Ohio - tomorrow. Dorrie, fleeing problems of her own and curious about Isabelle’s past, agrees, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives. Isabelle confesses that, as a teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family’s housekeeper - in a town where blacks weren’t allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences just might help Dorrie find her own way.

Beautifully Written and Compelling.
Revisado: 07-17-22
A beautiful story of friendship and the very sad history of racism in our country. The characters were very well drawn and the author did a beautiful job of jumping back and forth in time to tell Isabelle's story. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Harry August is on his deathbed. Again. No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message". This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

The Most Frustrating Book I've Ever Read
Revisado: 07-17-22
I consume a lot of audio books. At least 1 a week. Some are so-so, some are awesome. I love Audible because if a book doesn't grab me by at least a few hours in, I can return it and choose something else. Often it takes a few chapters to get into a book, and even if reviews say, "It was a slow start but once you get into it, it's great" I'll read it.
The only reason I didn't return this book after 3, then 4, then 6, then literally 9 hours was because it was the choice of a book club I joined. That is literally the only reason I slogged through the boring first 3/4 of the book to finally end up engaged during the final 1/4. The premise is very interesting. Harry August's character is engaging. The antagonist is a well written sociopath. Unfortunately, that's just not enough for most of the book because it doesn't go anywhere! I literally kept asking myself, "What is the point of these characters? Where is the story? Is this all leading to something?"
It's not a short book and 9 hours of frustration just isn't worth the final 3 hours of finally being drawn in. Given a choice, I never would have given it the first 5 hours, let alone 9. Am I glad I was forced to get through it? I guess so. The final chapter was amazing and I listened to the last page twice. But damn Claire North, do better. As a reader, I had to work way too hard to get the payoff for this one.

DO NOT listen to these anti-abortion wackos...
Revisado: 06-02-22
I'm staunchly pro-choice, and reading people's reviews complaining about this book being about abortion and admonishing you in their reviews with "Don't kill your baby!" honestly made me feel like I HAD to read it (especially now, as an American woman in 2022, watching abortion rights aggressively targeted at every level).
This is an extremely important book for everyone to read, especially if you think abortion is wrong. This book shows the very real struggles women had when abortion was illegal, the consequences of women not having a choice in what happens with their own bodies, and what could happen if we're forced to go back to "back alley" abortions in this country. It's very well written and also realistic, in such a devastating way. It's not just about abortion. It's about family and love and how the lack of reasonable options around reproductive health (both mental and physical) had a devastating effect on an entire family.
Bottom line, abortion is (and must be) a personal choice, and there are always much more complicated reasons for that choice than any outsider can understand. Do yourself a favor and listen to Grace & Maryanne's story to understand what we MUST NOT, CANNOT allow this country to go back to.

Great story with a lot of historical significance
Revisado: 06-02-22
I learned a lot I didn't know about Irish history in this novel. It had me Googling to learn more about what actually happened.
The book had a bit of a slow start, but once it got going, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the parts that took place in the early 1900s in Ireland better than the parts that took place in present day NYC, but the last 1/4 of the book brought both parts together in a satisfying way. I would recommend this book. I did keep my interest and I learned a lot, and by the end, I was invested in the characters.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Harp Delaney is an unusual child, quiet and intelligent far beyond her years. She would rather spend her days in the library of the grand Georgian house that she sees as her home than playing on the streets with other children. Her mother, Rose, is the reserved and ladylike housekeeper at the Cliff House. The local women envy her grace and poise while the men admire her beauty. She behaves not as a servant should, but as someone who belongs at the ancestral home of eccentric loner Henry Devereaux.

Okay but not as good as I'd hoped
Revisado: 06-02-22
I loved Jean Grainger's Ravenswood and Star & Shamrock series so much, I couldn't stop listening. I loved the fact that they were multi-book series, allowing me to follow the characters through several books, and I couldn't wait to start the next book in the series. So I was excited to be starting a brand new series by her.
Last Port of Call was just ok and very predictable. Worst of all, the characters she's introduced in this first book, with the exception of a few, won't continue in the next, and their fates remain unknown. That was very disappointing. I won't be continuing with this series.

Revisado: 04-30-21
I love Heather Webber's book. She so beautifully weaves magic and the south to make you instantly invested in the characters and story. This one is so well written and the performance was spot on. I also love books with a twist, and this book has a doozy that you will not see coming.
