Historia
When we look back on our nation's history, the American Revolution can feel almost like a foregone conclusion. In reality, the first weeks of the war were much more tenuous, and a fractured and ragtag group of colonial militias had to coalesce to have even the slimmest chance of toppling the mighty British Army. American Spring follows a fledgling nation from Paul Revere's little-known ride of December 1774 and the first shots fired on Lexington Green through the catastrophic Battle of Bunker Hill.

Historia
From the archives of the American Film Institute comes a unique picture of what it was like to work in Hollywood from its beginnings to its present day. Gleaned from nearly three thousand interviews, involving four hundred voices from the industry, Hollywood: The Oral History, lets a listener “listen in” on candid remarks from the biggest names in front of the camera—Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Harold Lloyd—to the biggest behind it—Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele, as well as the lesser known individuals that shaped what was heard and seen on screen.

Historia
On the night of January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler leaned out of a spotlit window of the Reich chancellery in Berlin, bursting with joy. The moment seemed unbelievable, even to Hitler. After an improbable political journey that came close to faltering on many occasions, his march to power had finally succeeded. While the path of Hitler's rise has been told in books covering larger portions of his life, no previous work has focused solely on his eight-year climb to rule: 1925-1933.

The best account of Hitler’s rise to power.
Revisado: 08-26-20
Range’s narrative clarity is created by a prudent selection of the facts and details that count. He avoid unnecessary explication of the well-known and obvious. Range also tells the story by focusing on the interaction of its major player rather than the debate over ideas, a account already well-covered by previous writers. Hodgson’s narration is perfect—his voice drew me from chapter to chapter without any listening fatigue entering in. My strongest recommendation!

Historia
The Aeneid represents one of the greatest cultural and artistic achievements of Western Civilization. Within the brooding and melancholy atmosphere of Virgil's pious masterpiece lies the mythic story of Aeneas and his flight from burning Troy, taking with him across the Mediterranean the survivors of the Greek onslaught. Aeneas, after many travails and adventures, including a love affair with Dido Queen of Carthage and a visit to the underworld to see his father, ends up in Italy.

Just the Best!
Revisado: 04-21-20
I own nearly 1,000 audiobooks and have been listening to them since they were on LPs. I've always admired the books read by Charlton Griffin, such as his marvelous rendering of Somerset Maugham's short stories, but this Aeneid performance should be regarded as something very, very special. Griffin has taken the Dryden translation and made it come alive for the modern reader--I was hooked from beginning to end, though I skipped the long introduction. Griffin is a master of pace and characterization and listening to him, we become immersed in a story that contains some passages which could easily become boring and tedious, There's none of that in Griffin's reading. I want to thank Charlton Griffin for making me understand why Virgil's Aeneid is among the most important books of Western civilization. I get it now.

Historia
On a wet afternoon in September 1938, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain stepped off an airplane and announced that his visit to Hitler had averted the greatest crisis in recent memory. It was, he later assured the crowd in Downing Street, "peace for our time." Less than a year later, Germany invaded Poland and the Second World War began. Appeasement is a groundbreaking history of the disastrous years of indecision, failed diplomacy, and parliamentary infighting that enabled Hitler's domination of Europe.

Historia
In Berlin at War, acclaimed historian Roger Moorhouse provides a magnificent and detailed portrait of everyday life at the epicenter of the Third Reich. Berlin was the stage upon which the rise and fall of the Third Reich was most visibly played out. It was the backdrop for the most lavish Nazi ceremonies, the site of Albert Speer's grandiose plans for a new "world metropolis", and the scene of the final climactic battle to defeat Nazism.

Revisado: 06-18-18
Moorhouse eloquently tells the story of WWII from the perspective of those inhabiting Berlin. I already knew what happened when the Russians finally arrived but did not know what Berliners had suffered through in the previous three years. It's too much, of course, to call them 'victims,' but this book reminds us of their humanity.
