Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office.

Truly Something Special
Revisado: 10-05-18
We all have known Eleanors. They walk quietly on the outskirts of our lives and we give them very little thought except to perhaps acknowledge their awkwardness, their strangeness. Eleanor Oliphant seems completely fine in the beginning. Strange, literal, rigid, yet she is who she wants to be. Right? As the book progresses we are taken into a journey into her soul. As Honeyman pulls back each small layer we begin to question the title. Is she fine? With poignantly beautiful writing that is both charmingly funny and maddeningly terrible, Honeyman expertly reveals Eleanor to the reader. The real Eleanor, raw and broken and beautiful. I will admit that I do not have much experience with mental illness, nor the impact it can have on one’s life. Thus, I cannot speak to the accuracy of feelings and emotions Eleanor exhibits throughout the book, nor the ways it might be treated. What I can speak to is my own emotions, my own reaction to her story. Eleanor Oliphant is a true treasure and among the best books I have read this year. There is a deeper moral in the story. A lesson to remember that each of us have our own stories and that each of our stories are worth listening to. Before we judge, we should understand. I highly recommend this book.

Worth the Hype!
Revisado: 08-06-18
“Cinder” had been on my radar for quite a while. There is no doubt that this book is both hyped and acclaimed in the Audible and Goodreads world. Sadly, that has not always worked well for me. I was thus pleased when I finally got my ears on this book.
I cruised back and forth between 4 and 5 stars and even now I can make arguments for both ratings. Either way, it is quite good. Initially I wasn’t drawn to yet another rendition of Cinderella. Fortunately, while some of the framework is there, Meyer transcends the aged story and brings in new life. The writing was solid and the characters were well drawn. The plot was not only different than Cinderella but was innovative and modern. Cinder herself, was a strong and capable heroine and I loved the fact that she is Asian . However, what I liked most about Meyer’s take is the character of Prince Kai. Far too often in these types of works the male protagonist trends to the boring, insulting and occasionally abusive bad boy type. I tend to think less of the main character for having any interest in these types of men. Kai is incredibly well written. Strong yet fragile, intelligent yet naïve. He is undoubtedly one of the best male characters I have read in young adult fiction.
The main reason I decided not to elevate “Cinder” to 5 stars has to do with originality. While Meyer updated the story brilliantly, she still had to take the basic framework of “Cinderella” to achieve her goal. Sadly, she really didn’t need to do this. “Cinder” differs so much from the source material that it wouldn’t have taken much to make it a completely independent work. Meyer seemed to occasionally force “Cinderella” references to fit her story. I simply cannot give 5 stars to a book that feels the need to use another writer’s work as a crutch.
Still, Cinder was outstanding and well worth the listen and the narration was top notch.

Historia
At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting - he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth.

A Doorway to Your Soul
Revisado: 01-14-17
I thought I had understood. I was wrong. As I listened to the opening words of this remarkable story I was quite certain I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I could tell immediately that the quality of the writing was graceful yet deliberate, beautiful yet haunting. I also believed that I knew the story. The metaphor. I was already composing the review in my head (still likely 4 or 5 stars) where I compared it to a cheeseburger. A story that brings nothing new to the discussion but yet, in its simplicity is still beautifully executed. If I had stopped there, perhaps that is all I would have taken away. A delicious cheeseburger of a story. Thank you Patrick Ness for creating a true work of art. Thank you for creating a profoundly moving, stunning literary feat that somehow managed to turn 26 letters into a doorway to the soul. I have read few writers who have so thoroughly captured the essence of youth, of pain, of heartache. Though I cannot say with any certainty, I truly believe you have made Siobhan Dowd proud. This is a story that needed to be told, a story that needs to be shared regardless of how difficult it might be to do so. This is fantasy, this is reality, this is life. 5 stars, one for each time you made me cry. “AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY”
