people complaining about this book have either not finished it or have missed the point. all the character flaws etc that they claim to dislike is part of the journey... they're part of this fascinating person sharing the ups and downs of being human and fabulous and vulnerable and campy and honest as hell. it's priceless well-earned wisdom that we all can use… and it's fantastic campy fun too

Listening to this again, I found I had many questions again about the aptness of this subject with regards to the normalization (or even aesthetic anointment) of sexual assault. The narrator does an excellent job getting across the wretchedness of protagonist, so it's not an easy topic to sort out. As far as the writing, it's really one of the most carefully and tightly crafted novels, with a voice that is so finely tuned to the speaker's pedophilic psyche (of which there are certainly, and understandably, few representations), that it's amazing how caught up one might get in a very sick person's mind.

I really don't see why we're listening to someone who's set up such a regressive task for himself, perhaps only to argue for his own continued relevance? Just because there's "progress" in the world doesn't mean that it all was due to the "enlightenment." There's lots of awful stuff that came out of the enlightenment, which he'd never discuss, of course, and there are lot of gains that we've achieved because we've had to learn to thing outside of those values. Why wouldn't he bring them up? Because they don't usually come from Europe, of course. Destroying civilization and the planet tho--we can thank his people for that.
