Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Great narration. Learned a ton. Very interesting. Full of facts without being too dense. Author did a great job painting a picture and revisiting concepts when needed.

Where’s the PDF????
Revisado: 03-25-25
I was very excited about this book. Unfortunately I was never provided access to the promised PDF of images for the artwork discussed in the book. I emailed the publisher, author and Audible. I received no response from any of them. I thought the audio version would be ok because of the promised PDF. Not very interesting when you have no access to pictures of the artwork being discussed.

Historia
In the early evening of June 25, 1980 in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, two middle-class outsiders named Vicki Durian, 26, and Nancy Santomero, 19, were murdered in an isolated clearing. They were hitchhiking to a festival known as the Rainbow Gathering but never arrived. For 13 years, no one was prosecuted for the "Rainbow Murders", though deep suspicion was cast on a succession of local residents in the community, depicted as poor, dangerous, and backward.

I don’t understand why I had to endure all the rambling about this author’s love life. I thought the book would be about a murder. The coverage of the murder itself was shallow. In addition, what is the purpose of summarizing the entire case in the prologue?? Plenty of worthwhile books out there. No need to read this one.

Historia
Melissa Ramirez, Claudine Anne Luera, Guiselda Hernandez, and Janelle Ortiz were four marginalized women striving to make ends meet as sex workers. They looked out for one another. But they would soon share a connection that none of them could have imagined. When Melissa was found dead, the other three women were on edge but assumed they were safe. Twelve days later, they too were dead and police had detained an unlikely suspect—Juan David Ortiz, a ten-year veteran of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Well researched
Revisado: 10-07-24
Very well researched and well-written book. Author gave the backstory of the killer, victims, law enforcement, media, and the other agencies involved in the case. Not political in any way. The author does spend about 5 minutes discussing the general atmosphere at Border Patrol toward immigrants and women, but this is very minor. Confused at the reviews that criticize the author for being too political? Are you folks that threatened by an honest reporting of the atmosphere at the US Border Patrol? My guess is that the author was implying that the pedestrian misogyny didn’t help coworkers identify some of the killer’s problematic behaviors (e.g hiring prostitutes). The author also mentions the connection between combat veterans and poor mental health outcomes-outcomes that include violence more so than other mental health disorders. Was that the political part that so infuriated you folks? Anyway, I enjoyed the book. Author did a great job discussing each victim with compassion and honesty.

Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

F@&$ing LOVED this mf@&$ing book! Laughed out loud at several parts. I try to avoid any book read by its author, but the narration was absolutely brilliant. One of the few times an author’s narration made a book even better. The story is great too. I learned a lot and enjoyed myself while doing so.

Israel and Palestine: The Complete History seeks to explain the overall story of Israeli and Palestinian tensions and divisions in the region. Indeed, without properly understanding the full history of the area, it is impossible to understand the current situation. In this book, author Ian Carroll takes the listener back to the very beginning of the conflict some 4,000 years ago, then moves through the major events of the Middle Ages and 20th century, and brings us right up to the present day, documenting the significant events that have happened along the way.

Exactly what I was looking for
Revisado: 12-20-23
The book offers a nicely written, unbiased, and brief account of the history of this conflict. The narration can be a little too fast and monotone, but the content made it worth listening to. Confused that some could accuse the book as biased, when it merely offers facts without commentary or judgement. This is the least biased book I’ve read in this topic. Highly recommend!

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Enjoyed, funny and light
Revisado: 10-12-23
This book starts slow, but I was loving it by chapter 6. Recommended reading for folks who can appreciate dark humor and an honest look at death and the American practices that surround it. Reads as a light, humorous memoir. Thankfully void of spiritual preaching or encyclopedic rundowns of cross-cultural death rituals.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

This is the kind of book I look for as a nonfiction reader. Wouldn’t have minded more details and more story. I loved the narration, but it is heavy-handed at times. I’m grateful they didn’t choose a Brit to narrate.

Historia
The Irish-American story, with all its twists and triumphs, is told through the improbable life of one man. A dashing young orator during the Great Famine of the 1840s, in which a million of his Irish countrymen died, Thomas Francis Meagher led a failed uprising against British rule, for which he was banished to a Tasmanian prison colony. He escaped and six months later was heralded in the streets of New York - the revolutionary hero, back from the dead, at the dawn of the great Irish immigration to America.
