Historia
Here, for the first time, in a brilliant, panoramic portrait by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb, is the definitive, often shocking story of the politics and the science behind the development of the hydrogen bomb and the birth of the Cold War. Based on secret files in the United States and the former Soviet Union, this monumental work of history discloses how and why the United States decided to create the bomb that would dominate world politics for more than forty years.

Better than Folly of the Bombs but not as good as TMotAB
Revisado: 01-28-25
Good overall, but still there are parts that are drawn out and I found myself missing huge parts of it. Very much a spy book and deals with the getting of the information by the Soviets on The Bomb and development of the H Bomb. Where TMotAB goes into more interesting development of personalities of those involved and had a build of momentum towards the end, this kinda stagnantes. it's worth the listen, but Rhodes other books are much better. Folly of the Bombs is very similar, certainly worth the listen but could had been made a bit more stream lined.
The major issue I have with this is the narrator and the mixing of the sound. the narrator is soft spoken and monotonal. The mixing of the sound does him zero good and if you turn up the volume the bass muffles his words. I had to turn off my bass and turn up my treble all the way to get a clear narration that didn't sound like Charlie Browns teacher.

Historia
Deep in the African rain forest, near the legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, an expedition of eight American geologists are mysteriously and brutally killed in a matter of minutes. Ten thousand miles away, Karen Ross, the Congo Project Supervisor, watches a gruesome video transmission of the aftermath: a camp destroyed, tents crushed and torn, equipment scattered in the mud alongside dead bodies - all motionless except for one moving image - a grainy, dark, man-shaped blur.

oh God the narration
Revisado: 07-07-22
I haven't read this book over 20 years. decides to listen to it again after re-reading Jurassic Park for the fourth time. oh my God, the narration of this book The narrator who actually isn't that bad of a narrator. she has good cadence good rhythm seems to want to emphasize the masculine voices in the most of nauseous ways. I have no problem with an aerator trying to imitate either male or female voice. this one is quite obnoxious. if anything it's laughable. it takes away from the story of which after listening to this, 20 years later isn't all that great of a story.

Historia
As the dominant species on Earth, humans have made astonishing progress since our ancestors came down from the trees. But how did the descendants of small primates manage to walk upright, become top predators, and populate the world? How were humans able to develop civilizations and produce a globalized economy? Now, in The Age of Wood, Roland Ennos shows for the first time that the key to our success has been our relationship with wood.

odd cadence and pauses, but good overall
Revisado: 12-12-21
like others have said the narrator has an odd cadence. it can at times be distracting. there's also off pauses. to the point I have checked my phone thinking I was receiving a call. but the story is good and certainly worth the time to listen

started off great but got really bogged down.
Revisado: 07-31-21
I love science. I enjoy reading about the natural world and how things are connected and work. but unfortunately this book got way too bogged down in the middle and to the end. to the point I was just like "I can not wait to finish this book" performance is ok, but also tends to drone on. interesting and certainly has parts worth it, but the thick middle part is just not worth the time for a casual listen.

not as good as mythos, about as good as heros.
Revisado: 07-10-21
in parts it falls flat. not as much Steven Fry humor as mythos, but still a good chuckle from time to time. again not as good as mythos, but I would venture it's the whole vast family web and back story that kinda bogs this book down. By no means is this an insult to the book or performance, but just a fact that the complexity of the narrative and the interweaving of relationships in the story pull away from the light hearted and guy chuckling that the previous books brought.

hilarious, captivating and all around a great book. I laughed out loud several times which is rare for me in a book. performance was ok, but the book itself makes up for it.
