Historia
Agatha Raisin’s private detective agency is working flat out on a series of shop burglaries. The break-ins seem to have taken a violent turn when a friend of Agatha’s is murdered during a raid on his shop. Although determined to nail the villains, Agatha still makes time to help Sir Charles Fraith prepare to stage a massive, hugely glamorous, promotional event in the grounds of his ancestral home, Barfield House.

Revisado: 11-20-24
Time to let Agatha go. IMHO, these sequels just don't work. Why turn Charles into a conniving jerk? Let Agatha and Charles continue their endearing bickering, and bring in a new character. Anyway, glad some seem to enjoy it. But no more.

Very disappointed - can't even finish
Revisado: 10-21-24
I've read the Hamish and Agatha follow-ups by Green and they have been tolerable. This story combined with the narration was very disappointing. The American spy story was not interesting - I didn't even finish it. And the narrator's different voices were just overdone and annoying–making the book worse. How I miss Graeme Malcolm. Subsequent narrators have simply been the wrong style.

Historia
Building a New Nation chronicles the development of the new government following the signing of the Constitution. It explores the political views of the young nation’s leaders as they struggled to form a strong nation, despite the foreign and domestic dilemmas that they faced. The authors describe the beginnings of the two-party system, the administrations of the first three presidents, and key decisions by each branch of the government that shaped the future of the country.

Good overview but omits critical elements
Revisado: 04-19-20
This has very good content regarding key issues in history as well as details of history. And it is for young people, but that doesn't mean critical facts that are unsavory should be avoided. The portion on George Washington at Mount Vernon that refers to his directions to "stewards" -- these were enslaved people, not paid stewards. Why try to camouflage such an important piece of history?
Another example is the description of the 1800 election and how the two new parties campaigned against each other. It refers to Federalists claims that included the charge that Jefferson had illegitimate children. The text then states that the claims were lies. It's surprising that any historians would still deny Jefferson had children with Sally Hemmings. Leave this charge out if it's not the right age to bring up this topic, but don't state that this claim was a lie. I found such examples a deep disappointment. The founding fathers were not perfect or American history for that matter -- children should know that.

Historia
One of the darkest and cruelest chapters in the history of the United States occurred when the nation’s young government decided to remove the native peoples from their lands in the name of profit. Having helped settlers for hundreds of years, five Native American tribes found it increasingly more difficult to relate to, and trust, the country that had once acted as their allies. The native peoples had fought alongside the Americans to gain freedom from England, the nation that the colonists deemed oppressive and unfair.

Story is needed but too didactic
Revisado: 06-03-19
While this brief overview of the forced removals of native peoples is needed, it is far too didactic. It rings like a 6th grade social studies lesson. The horrific facts speak for themselves. There is no need to continually add commentary of a "teaching" nature. I agree with what is being said, but it puts the production too much in teacher mode.

Revisado: 06-03-19
I hate writing a poor review of an AMS book, as I've read nearly 90% of what he has written. But I did not enjoy this book at all. Did not find the characters or story compelling in any way. The narrator is excellent but the material for me was extremely lacking.

I read Maya's memoirs in print several years ago and decided to listen to her reading them. This first memoir is as wonderful as I remember. How does one expand on pure authenticity, descriptions, and wisdom. I can't. But read this if you're looking for a book with incredible depth.

Entertaining story but didn't care for narration
Revisado: 04-28-18
I have enjoyed other Wilkie Collins books and this story draws you in. This was especially important because the narration was not at all what I like. It's a reading with a dramatic twist which is overkill in my opinion. The voices are sometimes shrill. I almost returned it. I appreciate a simple reading with some inflection and changes in voices.
But I got drawn into the story and wanted to hear the end. Would recommend finding a different narrator if possible.

Not enough mystery for me
Revisado: 04-18-18
While I love period mysteries to both experience a time in history and a thrilling story, this lacked a tight mystery. The characters were not well-developed enough, so that one loses interest on how it all turns out. I enjoyed the details on living in the 14th century but the people and story just didn't hold my attention.

Historia
Over the course of a 30-year career, Eddie Izzard has proven himself to be a creative chameleon, inhabiting the stage and film and television screens with an unbelievable fervor. Born in Yemen and raised in Ireland, Wales, and postwar England, he lost his mother at the age of six. In his teens he dropped out of university and took to the streets of London as part of a two-man escape act; when his partner went on vacation, Izzard kept busy by inventing a one-man act, and thus a career was ignited.

I wish I'd heard more personal revelations than...
Revisado: 10-21-17
accounts of what was done when and how.
I love Eddie Izzard (and I don't even know him) and took many good things from this book. His thoughts on the loss of his mother, and then thoughts on his father and brother. Also, his sharing of the traumatic act of coming out.
But he lost me when the book began to turn into a diary of progress of his career through the years. Yes, I know it shows his perseverance and the mountains he climbed. And maybe he wanted to tell upcoming stars about the amenities of tour busses. But I missed more insights of those closest to him and those he formed a link with in his work.
For example, he refers to the camaraderie of groups, such as the comedy troupes in Britain and the South African marathon support team. As opposed to general observations of the group, I'd rather hear anecdotes about specific insights or interactions. More insights with "support" people than celebrity references. More relationship-based than activity-based.
I appreciated his final notes on thoughts on the universe and couldn't agree more with the belief that the world could be changed by just adhering to the golden rule. But I felt a bit lost by that time. I may hold back on divulging feelings but hoped to hear more reflections from you Eddie. Still, love you just the same.

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

Just not my style
Revisado: 04-02-17
I'm afraid my review is quite different from most of the others. I couldn't finish the book -- it was feeling to sugary for my taste. Also, while many liked the narrator, I did not enjoy hearing the voice. Yes, it is a young girl's point of view, but it still felt like a kid's book.
