Masterpiece
Revisado: 10-14-12
I feel like my opinion is not really worth much on the matter. I'm not a literary scholar, no critic or reviewer, just a dude who enjoys the occasional spooky story.
I don't know why I feel trepidation at having to defend my love for this story either. I see it's done pretty well on the charts here. Four out of five stars is nothing to easily dismiss. But I do love this story, and I think my concern stems from the feeling that I should not be the only one.
I don't think Duma Key is, or should be considered, 'Just another King novel'. to me, it feels like his absolute best. His opus.
A bold claim, so maybe you'll sympathise with that trepidation now. Please, read this book, listen to the excellent John Slattery who captures the spirit of Edgar Freemantle to the core.
This is my favorite Stephen King Novel, maybe it's yours too.

Historia
Dolores Claiborne's elderly employer dies suddenly, apparently from falling down a flight of stairs. This tragedy sparks memories of the day Dolores' husband died...the day of the total eclipse. Suspected by police and townspeople alike, she delivers a story of a disintegrating marriage, and the breaking point reached by a docile woman.

A favorite
Revisado: 10-14-12
This is one of my favorite King novels, mostly because the the title character remains one of my favorite female protagonists in contemporary american literature. Dolores feels incredibly real to me, as if I knew her from my childhood. She reminds me of my mother, who I love and admire, and therefore my admiration for this book was a forgone conclusion.
Credit must also be given to the excellent narration by the wonderful Frances Sternahagen. The woman is a gem.

Didn't quite hit the bullseye...
Revisado: 10-14-12
It wasn't the best dramatic narrative I've read, even by King, but it has some merits. Blaze is an interesting protagonist and his relationship with his partner in crime is an interesting take on the Mice and Men structure.
I ended up rooting for the guy and managed to empathise with his troubles, even though I could clearly see the strings being pulled.
It may not have hit the bullseye, but it didn't pass the board.

Tried to like it...
Revisado: 10-14-12
I've been trying to get into military Sci-Fi series like Starship Troopers and thought I'd give this and a several other books a try. Unfortunately, I can't really say I dug this one. It just sort of felt forgettable and dull.

Historia
Ten strangers, apparently with little in common, are lured to an island mansion off the coast of Devon by the mysterious U.N. Owen. Over dinner, a record begins to play, and the voice of an unseen host accuses each person of hiding a guilty secret. That evening, former reckless driver Tony Marston is found murdered by a deadly dose of cyanide. The tension escalates as the survivors realise the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again...and again.

I suppose I'm just not a fan
Revisado: 10-14-12
Okay, so take my review with a grain of salt, if you are a fan of Christie, this title is probably just fine. This was just one of several attempts to break into the author's collection that met with failure. I suppose I'm just not meant to be a fan.
The narrator did a fine job, but I can't really rate the story much higher as I suppose it's just not my cup of tea, so to speak.

Dull and Unoriginal
Revisado: 10-14-12
The narrative is stilted, characters, particularly the antagonists, uninteresting and the lukewarm plot leaves much to be desired.
Coupled with an overly dramatic narrator what you got here is an incredibly regretful purchase.

The ups and downs of King novels
Revisado: 08-16-08
King has a tenancy to build up his stories and fail to deliver a satisfying climax. This book was by no means bad, but it simply left me unsatisfied by the end.
The narration was good and the characters were alright, but the way King chose to represent, for the lack of a better word, the 'Adversaries' of this story was a huge letdown.
But that's just me and I hope you enjoy the book better than I did!
I still remain a huge King fan.
