Historia
Following up on the first volume, The Atheist Handbook to the Old Testament: Volume 2 takes up the challenge of providing a clear and useful guide to those wanting a better understanding of the Old Testament, including its cultural and historical background, as well as discussions on contentious topics like violence and genocide, and whether the Exodus was a real historical event. Volume two also covers the narrative of the Old Testament, from the conquest to the divided monarchy, and a brief history of Egypt to help situate the biblical text within agreed historical events.

Informative and concise
Revisado: 01-17-23
The author in parts, quite a bit of information about ancient near eastern material relating to the Bible. However, it is not excessively verbose, but it is understandable, and of a reasonable compass.

Historia
Rights of Man presents an impassioned defense of the Enlightenment principles of freedom and equality that Thomas Paine believed would soon sweep the world. He boldly claimed, "From a small spark, kindled in America, a flame has arisen, not to be extinguished. Without consuming...it winds its progress from nation to nation."

Interesting, but in some senses dated
Revisado: 07-13-18
The book is very interesting as a historical document. However, one should pay very careful attention to the subtitle. If one is looking for a detailed argument explaining the basis of and justification for the doctrine of natural rights one will be disappointed. The book is fundamentally a reply to various positions taken by Edmund Burke against the French revolution. Thus, as I said above, as a historical document it is fascinating. But, it is not, and frankly as the subtitle indicates is not intended to be, a systematic treaties on the nature and origin of “rights“.

Historia
Why the Right Went Wrong offers a historical view of the right since the 1960s. Its core contention is that American conservatism and the Republican Party took a wrong turn when they adopted Barry Goldwater's worldview during and after the 1964 campaign. Since 1968, no conservative administration could live up to the rhetoric rooted in the Goldwater movement that began to reshape American politics 50 years ago.

Full of interesting insights
Revisado: 11-07-16
While many on the right would not agree with the conclusions of the author, he offers many interesting insights and observations about the course of the right wing of the Republican Party in the last 50 or so years. I found it interesting, fascinating, and well read. Worth anybody's time who is interested in the history and evolution of the American political system in the years since Eisenhower.

Historia
Why is America living in an age of profound economic inequality? Why, despite the desperate need to address climate change, have even modest environmental efforts been defeated again and again? Why have protections for employees been decimated? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers? The conventional answer is that a popular uprising against "big government" led to the rise of a broad-based conservative movement.

Well in person would want to doublecheck any of the facts, if they are even half of them true they are very disturbing.

Historia
The U.S. scientific community has long led the world in research on such areas as public health, environmental science, and issues affecting quality of life. Our scientists have produced landmark studies on the dangers of DDT, tobacco smoke, acid rain, and global warming. But at the same time, a small yet potent subset of this community leads the world in vehement denial of these dangers.

Good read on audible, but has more impact when read imprinting print
Revisado: 10-01-16
The book tells a fascinating story, one that gives the reader plenty to think about in terms of the way our public policy is arrived at and the role of the government in the market. However part of the impact of this book is in the extensive documentation which you are not fully aware of if you are only hearing the book. So while I recommend the book to any interested Reader, I do suggest that you also get a copy either in your Kindle or in physical form.

Historia
Famous for its unflagging narrative power, fine organization, and irresistibly persuasive arguments, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire has earned a permanent place of honor in historical literature. Gibbon's elegantly detached erudition is seasoned with an ironic wit, and remarkably little of his work is outdated.

Good History, but older performance
Revisado: 01-21-13
What made the experience of listening to The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Volume 2 the most enjoyable?
The story the author is telling is in itself fascinating and the point of view from which he tells it makes it even more interesting.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Constantine
Did Bernard Mayes do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
This is the weakest spot in the work. The narrator does not make voice shifts to differentiate the characters, and since this is a history work written in the third person that is not really to be expected.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A bit of both.
Any additional comments?
If you are not interested in the story this history wants to tell, do not get this book. It was not produced as entertainment, but as the author often says, to be instructive.
