Terrible female narrator - Thankfully brief

If you are reading book 24 in this series you probably have a good idea about what you are going to get story-wise. It’s not going to win any literary awards but it’s satisfyingly more of the same comfort read. I can’t decide if the female narrators issue is that she is not a native English speaker or an AI reader but the voice is gratingly high, the pronunciations are frequently not quite right and the tone and inflection choices are largely …. Wrong.
Definitely don’t pay for this book but if it’s free it may be worth listening for the sake of completeness if you’ve already read the other 23 books.

Not really the first book in a new series. Plot included lots of unbelievable motives and actions.

This book is labeled as a first book but is clearly a continuation of the Adair Family series by the same author. If you don’t like feeling like you are missing the backstory on half of the characters start with the other series.

Also I found the characters motivations and actions that were used to progress the story to be utterly ridiculous. Particularly the “bad characters”. But also the reason for the 3rd act breakup plot. …

The narrators were fabulous. The writing was ok. The plot drivers were just too atrocious to make me want to read any further in this story or backtrack to the beginning of the other characters.

A familiar setting for a historical romance with a new plot and a strong heroine.

It had its fun family moments. But really I have a hard time with the immaturity of these 40 yr old MCs still clinging to the breakup of an 8 month relationship when they were basically children. The use of miscommunication as a plot driver for basically the whole story is a personal problem for me. The FMC goes on and on about how bad the break up was that she isn’t even willing to talk to him nearly 2 decades later …. It takes about 80% of the book before we find out that it wasn’t that big of a deal. It takes 90% before we find out why he broke up with her. … it’s just so much overly drawn out contrived drama. It was a struggle to finish…. Obviously I’m in the minority.

This book had so much more potential based on the blurb. Sadly, the “badass FBI” woman is a ridiculous moron. If you are reading it for the smut factor. Go ahead and read. If you are looking for great characters or a story outside of the bedroom look elsewhere.

Also. Joe Arden does not narrate this book. At all.

The first part of the book is fairly redundant. He pursues her. They have sex. She denies it’s a relationship. Fortunately the last 1/4 of the book gets more eventful.

The female narrator is good if dramatic and breathy. Which is extra noticeable as the male narrator read similar scenes with very little emotion.

The story was good. Although she seemed much to self assured and confident as she JUST graduated. But my biggest problem is that she’s in her early 20s and he’s in his mid 30s yet the female narrator sounds like she’s MUCH older and the male narrator sounds too young. Add to that, the female narrator parts included way too much audible breathing and mouth noises. Maybe more editing? Or some re-recording of those bits??

I’ve been happily binging Amy Daws Wait With Me series and then the Harris Brothers series. So naturally I went straight into this spinoff series. But tragically Amy decided to give us one of the most ridiculous, unlikeable idiot heroines. … Let’s recap SPOILER ALERT

She makes a sex video without consent. Which is of course already deplorable! . But the reason…. To get back at a cheating ex?!? It what world would that help her? And why would that upset the new cheating couple? Or break them up? It was all such a dumb premise to start. …. But fast forward 2 years. And she still has the video and the two start dating and she doesn’t tell him about or delete the video. Until she finally does, and I think FINALLY this woman has grown a brain. I mean better to tell him but at least she finally deleted it…. And then her ex-stepsister uses the video that she saved two years ago to blackmail her into attending the wedding so her dad will walk the ex-stepsister down the aisle.

Ok. NOW she’s gonna tell him right? I mean it could ruin his endorsement deals…. So she’ll tell him and they will deal with it? Nope. She agrees to go to the wedding. Not only agrees but totally tells the blackmailer how terrible it would be if it leaks totally giving her even more leverage. Won’t let him come and somehow believes that the woman who stole her sisters bf, and is blackmailing her (and her new bf by proxy) with this video will keep her word and delete it rather than just hold it over her head forever. And just when you think she can’t be anymore stupid. … she has a heart to heart with her dad about the sister and how hurt she is…. So naturally he decides to not walk her down the aisle …. So it gets leaks.

How could she not see that coming? She’s so worried about the video and the purpose for it is to keep the dad in the wedding…. But she stupidly convinced him not to go….. so. It gets leaked. And she is in PR. And works for a Huge PR firm. And the only option they can come up with is having her take the fall? I mean. How big of a scandal is a sex tape between people who are dating… each other. No cheating. …. I mean no one in this fancy PR firm pitches the idea that they just say…. Yep. We are dating … and having sex. Seriously. Fire this firm. And somehow her ability to weather a sex video …. Not spin it. Just endure somehow makes her more qualified for PR? And he takes her back. With virtually no graveling on her part. … He even flies to Chicago to get her back. Where she has once again come up with a ridiculous plan. To attend the wedding and really SHOW them. ….

Ugh. So stupid. All of it. Terrible. She does not deserve a HEA. Find this man a better woman. And the worst part is I’m going to keep reading. Even though I’m fairly certain the next heroine is also an idiot.

This book was a new author for me and I don’t think I’ll be returning. Some quirky funny is good but this was just all over the top in a failed attempt at humor. The main characters were super immature and I didn’t feel any connection to them.

And. The male narrator was fine for the male parts but his voice for every female was horrible.

The fact that I managed to finish this book was a miracle.

Such a discombobulated bunch of words pretending to be a story.

I assume somewhere there are books that came before this and explained some things even though this is the first in series because there seems to be a lot of backstory implied but totally missing. Story points start and then fall away with no more mention…. The h and H fall in love with no explanation or build up. Bad guys conveniently die in a car accident. The.End. ….?

Thank goodness the narrators were good.
