Historia
Mary Mallon was a courageous, headstrong Irish immigrant woman who bravely came to America alone, fought hard to climb up from the lowest rung of the domestic service ladder, and discovered in herself an uncanny, and coveted, talent for cooking. Working in the kitchens of the upper class, she left a trail of disease in her wake, until one enterprising and ruthless "medical engineer" proposed the inconceivable notion of the "asymptomatic carrier" - and from then on Mary Mallon was a hunted woman.

Too much fiction and artistic license, would have preferred more accuracy. No I wasn't expecting or wanting non-fiction.

The Saga continues. These books are so immersive and enjoyable. The knowledge that Randolph has of the time period shows through.

marginal narration
Revisado: 04-05-24
Good story. Sometimes the narration was very amateurish, like a child trying to read out loud to a classroom.

Good narration, but I don't like the main character at all. He's childish and can't ever be serious.

Historia
In 1979, Vincent Bianco has just graduated high school. His only desire: collect a little beer money and enjoy his final summer before college. So he lands a job as a laborer on a construction crew. Working alongside two Vietnam vets, one suffering from PTSD, Vincent gets the education of a lifetime. Now forty years later, with his own son leaving for college, the lessons of that summer - Vincent’s last taste of innocence and first taste of real life - dramatically unfold in a novel about breaking away, shaping a life, and seeking one’s own destiny.

Coming of Age but not the Nam book as hyped.
Revisado: 03-12-24
If you like coming-of-age stories, this is a fantastic book with great insight on human nature. However, if you are looking for a book about Vietnam, you might be disappointed. This book is from the POV of Vincent who is looking back on the summer of his senior year, while his own son is ending his senior year of school and looking to the future. During Vincent's summer of '79 he worked on a construction crew with a couple of Vietnam Vets, one in particular would occasionally give snippets of stories from his summer of '68 on the Laotian border in Vietnam. Vincent also has possession of the Vet's journal from that year. Vietnam plays a small part of this book and just provides life lessons as Vincent both remembers the past and parents his son into his summer of 2016. I enjoy Dugoni's books, and I like this one for what it actually is. However, I picked it up because it was hyped as a fantastic book on Vietnam, which it isn't.

Narration issues, brilliant story
Revisado: 02-08-24
There are several spots where there is just dead air in the narration. Mr. Lloyd also mispronounces a number of words. I would expect a professional narrator to know that you noCK not noCH an arrow. That was just one example. This aside, I love Michael Crichton's books. He was an intelligent man that expects intelligence out of his readers.

Historia
Air Force pilot Captain Carlyle "Smitty" Harris was shot down over Vietnam on April 4, 1965 and taken to the infamous Hoa Lo prison—nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton." For the next eight years, Smitty and hundreds of other American POWs—including John McCain and George "Bud" Day—suffered torture, solitary confinement, and unimaginable abuse. It was there Smitty covertly taught the Tap Code—an old, long-unused World War II method of communication—to many POWs. In turn, they taught others, and it quickly became a way for POWs to communicate without their captors' knowledge.

Historia
When Freddie Mercury died in 1991, aged just 45, the world was rocked by the vibrant and flamboyant star's tragic secret that he had been battling AIDS. That Mercury had even been diagnosed came as a shock to his millions of fans, with his announcement coming less than 24 hours before his death. In Somebody to Love, biographers Mark Langthorne and Matt Richards skilfully weave Freddie Mercury's incredible pursuit of musical greatness with Queen, his upbringing and his endless search for love with the story of a terrible disease.

Well done
Revisado: 10-14-20
As with any biography you must decide what the person's agenda is in writing it. Richards' agenda is an interest in the history of AIDS as well as the later years of Freddie Mercury. There is quite an extensive history on Queen, Freddie's personal life as well as AIDS. If you would have asked me if I would read a book about the history of AIDS I would have shied away from it, why would the history of any disease be interesting enough to read a book on it? However, Richards presented the facts in a fascinating way. I was shocked at some of the information I learned. I appreciated how these facts tied in with Freddie's life and others at the time of the epidemic. I would highly recommend this book.
