'A wonderful idea, gloriously put into practice. Greg Jenner as is witty as he is knowledgeable.' (Tom Holland) 'Delightful, surprising and hilarious, this is a fascinating history of the everyday objects and inventions we take for granted.' (Lauren Laverne) Every day, from the moment our alarm clock wakes us in the morning until our head hits our pillow at night, we all take part in rituals that are millennia old.

A brilliant listen
Revisado: 08-09-22
Greg Jenner has written, and told, a fascinating, informative and fun weaving together of human histories that enable you to relate to people of cultures and times in a unique way.
I couldn’t recommend this brilliant book highly enough (and don’t be daunted by the length - it’s perfect for listening to in chapters.

Historia
Meet Rook. A middle-aged philosophy professor with a sarcastic sense of humour, an ongoing rivalry with his highly-strung colleague Jeremy, and a rocky relationship with his ex-wife. But he has far more pressing matters to attend to than domestic disputes and academic feuds. He moonlights as a private investigator. Armed with a quick, inquisitive mind, an arsenal of philosophic quotations and an addiction to fear, he is willing to embroil himself in any sticky situation which comes his way.

A brilliant interweaving of a crime with the wittiest of humor and laughs. Intelligent, and delightfully unique.
Michael Fenton-Stevens is the ideal narrator (& a master of accents!),
one of the most enjoysble books i’ve listened to in a long time. Can’t recommend highly enough

Historia
From Amazon number-one best-selling author Mark Dawson, this novella is an introduction to John Milton, the most dangerous assassin in the pay of Her Majesty’s government. Meet John Milton. He considers himself an artisan. A craftsman. His trade is murder. Milton is the man the government sends after you when everything else has failed. Ruthless. Brilliant. Anonymous. Lethal. You wouldn't pick him out of a crowd, but you wouldn't want to be on his list.

Mark Dawson on top form

For me this novella fully lives up to the rest of the John Milton books;
David Thorpe, as always, giving a flawless performance.

Historia
Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough - who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974. Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one 40 years old. But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on.

Deeply unpleasant and disappointing
Revisado: 07-15-22
To me this was reminiscent of some of the ‘casual’ and blatant sexism and homophobia prevalent in books , other media and popular culture of the 80’s and 90’s;
the difference in this case being that trans issues are bear the brunt, and not pervasively in the background, but as the central theme.
The otherwise admirable J.K. Rowling might have conveyed her argument more logically and reasonably in essay, discussion, or similar formats than in a novel. Whatever one’s views on trans issues it doesn’t serve the author well to convey them in a gruesome, extreme and simplistic fiction.

Historia
Mark Watson is generally accepted to be alive. And yet he’s died. In fact, he’s died loads of times. On stage. It’s embarrassing. Excruciating. But dying on stage isn’t the only death Mark’s suffered. There’s also been the death of his innocence. The death of that absolutely brilliant project that everyone told him was really amazing. And that time he died inside.

Thought provoking and seriously witty

Bravely honest stories of the writer’s own experiences, narrated with the skill and humour of Mark Watson’s unassuming trademark style.

Historia
Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Secret Life of the Owl by John Lewis-Stempel, read by Roy McMillan. 'Dusk is filling the valley. It is the time of the gloaming, the owl-light. Out in the wood, the resident tawny has started calling, hoo-hoo-hoo-h-o-o-o.' There is something about owls. They feature in every major culture from the Stone Age onwards. They are creatures of the night, and thus of magic. They are the birds of ill-tidings, the avian messengers from the Other Side.
