straight forward demonic possession
Revisado: 04-01-24
If you're looking for a simple, small town demonic possession book that is YA, then this is it. The ending was anticlimactic but was solid theologically so I guess that's something. I liked the main characters; it just felt very "but the numbers." I'm not surprised that the author was inspired by horror movies as it had similar beats.

I was having a rough day and this book had everything I needed. A hilarious funeral. Spy cats. A volcano lair in which you still can't escape bad zoom meetings. Foul mouthed dolphins. Explosions. Just do yourself a favor and listen to it.

Loved this story collection!
Revisado: 12-09-23
My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. I would have loved a couple more stories. I picked this up on sale after having read all of Rachel Harrison's novels (so good!) and was not disappointed. The author has this unique way of capturing the low grade horror and alienation from self that comes with being socialized as female in the U.S. that leaves me both captivated and reflective. I love that her writing is both unsettling and says something real. The only caveat I would say is that these stories are far less scary than The Return so if you're expecting that level of horror, you might be disappointed. I was expecting them to be a little scarier than they were but that's probably because dolls really creep me out. The narrator also did a great job (especially in the last story).

A real struggle to finish
Revisado: 12-04-22
I started this book when it first came out and never finished it. I just did a re-read of the All Souls Trilogy and was determined to finish this one too. I only managed through sheer force of will (and listening to some sections on 1.45 speed). First, the good- the parts set now are fun and we get to spend more time with all the characters we already know and care about. It was delightful to see Diana's kids and how their powers were coming in. To the point that every time we pivoted away from that, I found myself resenting it. That's where the real story is- with that family and these new creatures and Jack struggling to master his blood rage. Hell, I could even have done with some of Sarah's love story.... why don't we get to see her struggle with falling in love again after Em? But no, instead we're forced to follow Phoebe's transition in Paris, which is fairly uneventful, to be honest. And then, even worse, we are forced to hear about Marcus' boring back story. I don't care about the American or French revolution, and I didn't care about any of the many characters that wandered in and out of the meandering story. There was no real plot. No dramatic tension. The most interesting back story was in New Orleans and we only got those characters in one chapter. Why New Orleans wasn't the entire focus of the flashbacks is beyond me. Make us care about those characters. Make it hurt when they're killed. make us hate Matthew but also understand why he did it. Make us watch Marcus struggle in the present with the fact that Jack, who is more unstable than some of his murdered children, is allowed to live. Either that or go find another magical mcguffin, they can all chase around. Because then at least there would be a plot and some reason to finish. I cannot recommend you read this book unless like me you just really like the world and are willing to wade through the bad and the boring to get to the delightful.

Love this series! So much fun!
Revisado: 10-13-22
Alexander Kane writes hilarious books. Gretch is a great main character and the Florida setting is perfect. I love the idea of random Floridians with telekinetic powers. I was really glad that the dead pan NYC-loving Praeter was back. If I were to make a complaint, it would be that the villains are always cartoonishly evil but given that this is a comedic action series, I think it works. (Plus, let's be real, cartoonishly evil people are becoming less rare in the U.S. these days.). The final thing I will say is that the reveals about Praeter's love life in this book were great and the way he defended himself from criticism had me laughing for days. I also loved that he had full support from Gretch and her dad. (Love Gretch's Dad and definitely want more of him. Their relationship is so sweet and yet also feels real.)

Lia Doe came to Mystic Bayou for one simple reason: to get her job done. Namely, to build a housing complex for all the new residents flocking to town since word of its supernatural population got out. But from the moment Lia arrives, it’s clear that nothing about the job is going to be simple.

Great expansion of Mystic Bayou World
Revisado: 06-09-21
I was underwhelmed by the last in the series so I am very happy that this one felt like a return to form. The town is literally growing, which will bring in new characters and conflict in future books. I loved Leah and John's relationship and John's friendship with Eva. The plot follows the usual tropes but I enjoy the characters and town so much it doesn't matter. I'm excited to see where the series goes next.

Historia
Charlotte McBee knows she’s in for a challenge when she accepts a job as midwife for a dragon and a phoenix shifter. Being a fairy herself, it isn’t the supernatural world that scares her. It’s the thought of delivering a giant metal dragon’s egg, which has her gritting her teeth in pain for poor Jillian, the anxious mother-to-be. While preparing for the big event, a handsome town resident catches her eye. Leonard is kind, charming, and a little bit mysterious. He’s also suffering from a highly unusual condition brought on by an ancient fairy curse.

The Fae Blessing I want is a longer story
Revisado: 02-05-21
So I love the mystic bayou series so much that I almost have this five stars. The town is great, the characters are fun, and it's like returning to hang out with old friends every time a new book comes out. The problem is it doesn't feel like a book so much as a novella or a short story. I want more time with these new characters. The idea of a romantic lead who becomes increasingly clumsy when he gets nervous is comic gold, but it was so under utilized. Why??? Molly Harper is a great writer but I feel like these audible originals have just gotten shorter and shorter (like whatever minimum word count they require) and it is just disheartening for long time fans who want actual novels in these amazing magical worlds she creates. I'm in a pandemic. I need more love and magic. At least 7 hours worth.

Historia
Gretch Wolgast is a bit of a dud. Just ask her. She’s a 21-year-old college dropout who has a loser job at the mall. Sure, she can lift a tennis ball with her telekinetic powers. But only three feet in the air. And she has to be sitting. Gretch is an OP, one of thousands born in Orlando, Florida, in the early 1980s who mysteriously developed the ability to move things with their minds. Unfortunately, she turned out to be the weakest of the bunch. Now, Gretch’s life is being turned upside down. She witnesses a murder and discovers a wide-ranging conspiracy.

Another totally fun book by Alexander Kane. Smart, weird, funny. Love the main character's obsession with Orlando and her pov as a telekinetic dud. Super fun world. I'm hoping it becomes a serious. Will definitely be relistening to this one when I need a laugh.

Enjoyable sequel
Revisado: 01-04-20
I very much enjoyed this book. However, it definitely relies heavily on the first book so I don't recommend reading it out of order. The narrative unfolds on two main timelines (one in Prague in the early 80s and one in present day L.A./ Paris). The mystery is a little less compelling this time, but I enjoyed spending time with the characters and I appreciated the use of Jewish traditions and stories. The ending felt a little abrupt, but still complete. I wish there was more dialogue between Mai and Jacob about their relationship or Jacob and a third party. Their relationship doesn't entirely make sense (in regard to Jacob's reactions to her actions).

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. I got this on sale because I didn't want to use a credit on a short story. It was definitely worth the sale price! I'm sure I'll listen to it again. The world was really interesting. It raised some large questions (that I'd love to see explored in a novel. also, really enjoyed the main character.
