Short!

The story was okay…but it was over so quickly! Can’t believe I used a whole credit! I thought there’d be another chapter, but no such luck.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Kept me on my Peleton!
Revisado: 04-17-22
I’m a British mystery fan, but have run thru all the main authors - whether thru hard copies, audio books, BBC series on TV & other gems thru our streaming services…& have had a hard time finding something I like.
So, I was excited to stumble across this audio book: the plot kept me wanting to keep driving, continue to vacuum or stay on a Peleton ride. The back-&-forth between the characters’ narratives were a little off-putting at first (ie, I wasn’t paying attention). But it was a good story & worthy of a listen!

But Ellie refuses to leap to the obvious conclusion, despite the whispers and suspicions of those around her. Maybe it’s the grief, but Ellie has to find out who this woman was - and prove Greg wasn’t having an affair. And soon she is chillingly certain their deaths were no accident.

Good story & characters. I had a few misgivings about the plot…but at least it wasn’t predictable!

Historia
Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors - and the items stolen from her family were never recovered. Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

Fun plot but too much machismo!
Revisado: 03-28-21
The plot held my attention, but I almost quit several times b/c of the annoying protagonist. I get it - he’s a rich, macho renaissance man, & that’s his shtick. But it got to the point of ridiculous-bordering-on-sexist & just plain annoying. But Coban weaves a good plot!

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

I liked the gradual way the author let the reader predict what was going to happen...but still left a good surprise ending. Good local color too.

Fun if you like phsycho-mysteries...which I do. Good twisted story. A little beyond credible, but then again that's why I'm reading fiction. Definitely worth the purchase!

Not predictable with believable characters
Revisado: 10-31-19
I love British mysteries...esp on audiobook. But I get REALLY FRUSTRATED at predictable outcomes & authors who rely on characters’ illogical actions to make the plot line work. NOT THE CASE WITH THIS ONE! Further, the author (& the presenter) left the ethnicity of the main detective a bit ambiguous...which I liked. Good story, characters & plot.

Great suspenseful romance
Revisado: 07-09-19
I originally thought this was going to be a British mystery - my go-to audio book genre. But even though it turned out to be more of a romance, it was well-plotted, humorous at times & not too corny. Well worth a listen!

Just when you think you know someone...
Revisado: 07-01-19
Good characters with lots of twists & turns. Well plotted. And the reader did well with the various voices of the characters.
I’m prob nit-picking, but several times the tone of voice didn’t coincide with what the author wrote (one example: “...she said, bemused...” when the reader used a clearly accusatory voice.) But I will definitely read more by this author & listen to books by the reader.
