Life is getting better at an accelerating rate. Food availability, income, and life span are up; disease, child mortality, and violence are down all across the globe. Though the world is far from perfect, necessities and luxuries alike are getting cheaper; population growth is slowing; Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people's lives as never before.

Historia
Novelist Aaron Holland Broussard is shattered when his daughter, Fannie Mae, dies suddenly. As he tries to honor her memory by saving two young men from a life of crime amid their opioid-ravaged community, he is drawn into a network of villainy that includes a violent former Klansman, a far-from-holy minister, a biker club posing as evangelicals, and a murderer who has been hiding in plain sight.

Is Mr. Burke working some things out in this one?
Revisado: 01-16-23
First, I must say that I am down for just about anything that Burke writes. The vibe and cast of characters are similar to other JLB books. You have the lonesome cowboy like protagonist that is dealing with loss and personal demons, some personal and others from a generation that witnessed many societal wrongs. Our elderly writer hero has to deal with moral reprobates with wit and determination all while adhering to a southern code of sorts. And of course there is a sweet romance. The autobiographical cues are laid out here but it is cool to see for us long time JLB fans. He is a master storyteller and thanks again to the superb Will Patton who brings characters to life like no other. I did find it a bit difficult to follow along or rationalize the ephemeral characters that appear throughout. But, I did enjoy this book. I suggest you suspend belief and go with the flow.

Incredible Audio Presentation
Revisado: 02-23-22
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Initially, I had no interest after reading an interview with Will Smith in GQ. That changed after hearing an interview on the Questlove podcast where he explained his approach to the writing of the book and frankly I was impressed with the life wisdom he shared.
This format is perfect for the talents of Will as he is the narrator of his own content. There is some production value with sound effects and music as he relates some stories, complete with actual rapping and voice impersonations that will crack you up. Will is an extremely talented man who has embraced life and all it has to share as we age and experience it with our loved ones. Well done, simply well done.

Historia
Jim Thompson's classic The Grifters is one of the best novels ever written about the art of the con, an ingeniously crafted story of deception and betrayal that was the basis for the critically acclaimed film by Stephen Frears and Martin Scorcese. To his friends, to his coworkers, and even to his mistress Moira, Roy Dillon is an honest hardworking salesman. He lives in a cheap hotel just within his pay bracket. He goes to work every day. He has hundreds of friends and associates who could attest to his good character.

I saw the movie years back and faintly recalled the plot, but still enjoyed every minute of this tale. I actually had planned to listen to another Jim Thompson novel but was swayed the top marks given to the narrator. Barbara Rosenblat is a master with voicings. I look forward to hearing more of her work. She may be on par with the great Will Patton.

Historia
Freeway Rick Ross: The Untold Autobiography is an intimate look at the day-to-day dealings of a drug kingpin in the heart of the ghetto. It's also the story of a boy born in poverty in Texas who grew up in a single-parent household in the heart of South Central, who was pushed through the school system each year and came out illiterate. His options were few, and he turned to drug dealing. This untold autobiography is not only personal, but also historical in its implications.

I was fascinated by the story but...
Revisado: 12-10-20
The delivery was hampered by a narrator that could not swing the black lingo. I think only a brother can say the N word like it said between the homies. Also, the narrator mispronounced a few words here and there. I will gladly offer up my services as a book narrator! Rick’s story is amazing and I can see it becoming a movie. The story is a bit disjointed and wraps quickly toward the end almost epilogue style. I will chalk that up to Rick’s first foray and having to work with a co writer. It had moments of brilliance when describing the life and atmosphere of early 80’s. I will look forward to a screenplay!

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Historia
Detective Dave Robicheaux’s world isn’t filled with too many happy stories, but Desmond Cormier’s rags-to-riches tale is certainly one of them. Robicheaux first met Cormier on the streets of New Orleans, when the young, undersized boy had foolish dreams of becoming a Hollywood director. Twenty-five years later, when Robicheaux knocks on Cormier’s door, it's to ask about a young woman he found who’s been crucified. She disappeared near Cormier’s Cyrpemort Point estate, and Robicheaux, along with young Deputy Sean McClain, are looking for answers.

Revisado: 08-19-20
Once again, another forte in crime drama and masterful storytelling. Burke’s attention to detail is so fine that I felt like I was driving through New Iberia and environs with Detective Dave Robicheaux. I almost googled a street map to orient myself! Also, not sure if anyone else does this..but I took a break to listen to Jazz Saxophonist, Flip Phillips since he is referenced a few times. I was most likely attempting to make the story last as I hate to see these stories come to an end. Thank you Mr. Burke. I heard of the passing of your daughter, Pam while reading this. My heart goes out to you. Oh, also now listening to a Michael Connelly book since endorsed by the great Clete Purcell character!

For as long as she can remember, Lorna Byrne has seen angels. As a young child, she assumed everyone could see the otherworldly beings who always accompanied her. Yet in the eyes of adults, her abnormal behavior was a symptom of mental deficiency. Today, sick and troubled people from around the world are drawn to her for comfort and healing, and even theologians of different faiths seek her guidance.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Great subject matter but...
Revisado: 07-14-20
Really good and relevant subject matter with useful material. As an African American male I was interested enough to listen after I heard the title recommended by an admired speaker. My only issue was with the narration. It was mechanical and almost dispassionate. I would have preferred a more conversational reading tone. I had to speed up the narration pace towards the end to make it through.

The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Revisado: 10-24-19
This guy, Goggins overcame serious childhood trauma and made himself a hard specimen and rare among the rare. I am sure psychologists would have a field day on what drove him and how he ultimately proved his father wrong in his assessments of David and his mother. Goggins lays it all out here...the triumphs and the failures. I am inspired.
