Historia
Harriet Jacobs’ autobiography, written under the pseudonym Linda Brent, details her experiences as a slave in North Carolina, her escape to freedom in the north, and her ensuing struggles to free her children. The narrative was partly serialized in the New York Tribune, but was discontinued because Jacobs’ depictions of the sexual abuse of female slaves were considered too shocking. It was published in book form in 1861.

Powerful Testimony
Revisado: 11-10-17
I happened across this book at the Birmingham African American Museum in 2015. I read the book in a matter of weeks. However, listening to this book on audio was much more powerful. This story will always stay with me as an African American woman.

Historia
Twelve Years a Slave (Originally published in 1853 with the sub-title: "Narrative of Solomon Northup, a citizen of New-York, kidnapped in Washington city in 1841, and rescued in 1853, from a cotton plantation near the Red River in Louisiana") is the written work of Solomon Northup; a man who was born free, but was bound into slavery later in life. Northup's account describes the daily life of slaves in Bayou Beof, their diet, the relationship between the master and slave, the means that slave catchers used to recapture them and the ugly realities that slaves suffered.

Gaining Knowledge About My History
Revisado: 08-13-17
As an 30ish AA female, I desire to know more about AA history. It helps me to appreciate the opportunities that are before me. Individuals like Mr. Northup would not have taken these opportunities for granted like many of us today. This story was enlightening and a reminder that the slavery of African Americans was not that long ago.
