Historia
While plenty of entertaining books have been written about the history of alcohol and other intoxicants, none have offered a comprehensive, convincing answer to the basic question of why humans want to get high in the first place. Drunk elegantly cuts through the tangle of urban legends and anecdotal impressions that surround our notions of intoxication to provide the first rigorous, scientifically grounded explanation for our love of alcohol.

Great content; mediocre narrator
Revisado: 08-21-22
The content of the book is not only historically fascinating, but a welcome pushback against all of the modern finger-waggers who would have you believe that even a single drop of alcohol is going to wreck your life. Moderate drinking in social situations has vast social benefits, and if you haven’t experienced them for yourself, you’re missing some of the best that life has to offer.
The narrator, unfortunately, is obviously reading throughout the presentation, as evidenced by his constant over-enunciation of prepositions (especially “to”) and other short words which should be slightly slurred/blurred into following words when speaking naturally.

A man I have never met feels like a close friend.
Revisado: 03-07-22
This is the most engrossing autobiography I’ve ever read. Granted, I’m a geek and was familiar with many of the properties that Straczynski has been involved with. But I think huge numbers of people would deeply enjoy this book even if they were not. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised that a great writer is still a great writer even when he’s writing about himself. Inspiring and highly recommended. Especially if you hate Nazis.
Having Peter Jurasik, who played a popular character on Babylon 5, do the narration was a brilliant choice. He does a wonderful job.

Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of "when" decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork. Timing, it's often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.

Revisado: 09-25-21
Despite the somewhat bland title, this book is packed with insightful and, most importantly, actionable information about how all aspects of time, from the time of day to the time of life, affect our lives. Absolutely recommended.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Great tree metaphors abound, but the humans are dull
Revisado: 04-10-21
Definitely a love/hate experience for me. Make no mistake, the prose is genius level, and the construction of the story is unique and elegant. Unfortunately, however, the story is not very compelling. This is definitely more about the journey than the destination.. Worse, all of the human characters are flat, nearly incomprehensible in their motivations, and ultimately abandoned by the author in deeply unsatisfying ways.

Historia
In 2001 Mo Gawdat realized that despite his incredible success, he was desperately unhappy. A lifelong learner, he attacked the problem as an engineer would: examining all the provable facts and scrupulously applying logic. Eventually, his countless hours of research and science proved successful, and he discovered the equation for permanent happiness. Thirteen years later, Mo's algorithm would be put to the ultimate test. After the sudden death of his son, Ali, Mo and his family turned to his equation—and it saved them from despair.

Simultaneously uplifting and heart wrenching
Revisado: 11-17-20
Mo’s heavy accent takes a bit to get used to, but his narration of his own material is authentic and passionate. I’ve read many books on the theories behind human happiness and he doesn’t really uncover anything new, but it’s packaged pretty well. The final chapter, where he gives his views on why he thinks there is a “designer” behind our universe stands out in a bad way, however, when he relies on horribly inaccurate and long-discarded metaphors about evolution (a monkey with a typewriter couldn’t turn out a novel) that shows his fundamental misunderstanding of how evolution works. Otherwise, it’s a fine work and the story of the tragedy of his son is something we all can learn from.

Historia
Now hailed as an American classic, Tropic of Cancer, Henry Miller's masterpiece, was banned as obscene in this country for 27 years after its first publication in Paris in 1943. Only a historic court ruling that changed American censorship standards, ushering in a new era of freedom and frankness in modern literature, permitted the publication of this first volume of Miller's famed mixture of memoir and fiction.

“One of the most important English-language novels” <- Nope!
Revisado: 01-30-20
There’s little to be said about this book that hasn’t already been written. Read elsewhere if you want to learn more about the ridiculously overrated content. Just don’t waste your time on it if you think you need to read it to be “well-rounded” in your literary experience.
Probably the only book I have ever read where entire paragraphs could be deleted at random without affecting the quality of the work whatsoever.

Why do people dodge responsibility when things fall apart? Why the parade of public figures unable to own up when they screw up? Why the endless marital quarrels over who is right? Why can we see hypocrisy in others but not in ourselves? Are we all liars? Or do we really believe the stories we tell? Backed by years of research and delivered in lively, energetic prose, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) offers a fascinating explanation of self-deception.

Great content, but repetitive. Find a summary.
Revisado: 01-06-20
The content of this book is something everyone on this planet should be aware of and appreciate. Understanding cognitive bias is a key to success in life and business. But the book drags on with many examples of the same thing over and over, so finding an abridged version, or online summary of the same material is recommended, unless you want to spend the 9 hours here.
Ms Mercant's narration is incredibly perfunctory and unemotional, to the point that you could get something probably 90% as good having a computer voice read the text. There were even a couple of places where it's clear the authors were attempting humor, but she completely failed to change the mechanical drone of her narration, making for rather awkward sounding passages. Even in scholarly non-fiction like this, the narrator needs to understand the author's point and intention better.

Historia
In the early 1990s, Motorola, the legendary American technology company, developed a revolutionary satellite system called Iridium that promised to be its crowning achievement. Light-years ahead of anything previously put into space, and built on technology developed for Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars", Iridium's constellation of 66 satellites in polar orbit meant that no matter where you were on Earth, at least one satellite was always overhead, and you could call Tibet from Fiji without a delay and without your call ever touching a wire.

Fascinating story marred by poor audio production
Revisado: 01-06-20
Bloom's account of the remarkable devotion and love that kept the Iridium satellites in orbit is well-written and fascinating. But I have to mention that of the 170+ titles I've listened to from Audible, this is easily the worst-produced recording I've heard. The audio is badly marred by dozens of clumsy edits where it's clear that the producer and/or narrator didn't bother to confirm the pronunciation of some proper noun before recording, and then went back in and "fixed" it later. It's quite distracting. Full sentences or paragraphs should be rerecorded in situations like these, not individual words or phrases. It's nearly impossible to reproduce the audio quality of the original, and this really shows badly on this recording.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Fantastic content, mechanical narrator
Revisado: 07-26-19
Walker's book is phenomenal despite a lot of what's said here being what should be called "common sense" at this point, but he drives the point home extremely well. One is forced to imagine how much better a place the world would be if we came to our senses as a species about how we sleep.
I simply didn't care for the narrator. Despite many passages where it's clear the author is being playful or joking, he never changes his machine-like reading style. Certainly non-fiction doesn't need the kind of flair and characters that fiction does, but one can do much better than this.

Revisado: 12-24-18
I believe I first heard about this on the 10% happier podcast and dove in. Yikes. Chapters alternated between being deeply thoughtful and idea-provoking, and being utterly inaccessible to someone like myself who has no focused study of Buddhism yet. Some passages almost felt like they’d be written with a random word generator, but this reflects my unpreparedness for the material more than its quality. The author’s narration of his own work is quite good, but you may want to try 1.25x playback.
